The sentiments behind this cartoon are bang on!
I own my own small business. The products it produces are used by hundreds of the most famous companies and organisations in the world. My customers are a Who's Who list of famous companies. I have tens and tens of emails from my customers telling me how much they like my products and how much better they are than the competition.
I've worked for big and small companies for many years before I started my own business. Once I started my own work, I started to have my first original ideas in my whole life. My own business truly allowed me to be creative and to express what I can do in a way working for other companies did not.
Yet when I was meeting women from online dating sites, they dismissed my business because I said I was self-employed. It was very obvious all the women I met were only interested in my job history and they were very blatant about it. Not at all subtle.
My girlfriend and her family still nag and harass me to do something about my job situation!
This is despite the above. They really are a pain and utterly clueless. Even when faced with the truth it goes over their heads.
So this cartoon does speak of a truth. Girlfriends and their female family members are really clueless and cannot see the worth of a business. All they are concerned about is easily packaged and understandable status.
They would prefer I waste my life and time, instead of being happier and making more money. Because they are idiots. You don't even need to hide anything from them, because they are too thick to see what is obvious.

There’s no way you could own a company and convince your significant other that you simply work at that company… What about all the calls? Emails? What about the tax stuff? I totally get the vibe, however no young man should think that hiding a business from a significant other is ever going to be a long-term possibility. It’s just not practical.

Yes, but who handles the people who handle those things?
I see this as a distinction regarding CEO vs owner.
The board of directors of which the owner is the chair. But that's a once-a-quarter type thing.
handling != babysitting. You can "handle" them the next day, with the data from system logs.

Ummm no. Show me someone who can keep a company they own secret and I’ll show you someone who is incredibly “off” by societal norms in a big big big way, someone who is on the verge of failure, or someone so independently wealthy they never needed the company in the first place.
An owner who “lives breathes and eats” and his company is what that makes that company successful.

Like I said, either either all of your acquaintance’s businesses suck or it’s very obvious he lives breaths and eats in manner that it’s obvious he owns the businesses. Just because someone owns a shit ton of businesses doesn’t mean they’re successful. Even if they live an opulent life.
I also have no idea how that book has anything to do with this. How does that support your idea in anyway? Nor do I have any idea how you reading one book trumps my several business degrees/designations and years of experience. As well as the profound number of successful business people who espouse this idea.

I ran my own business for 24 years. All my clients were small to medium sized businesses and I can assure you, there is no one single manner to which all successful business owners subscribe.

If you run a business in a manner where people close to you, whether it’s a family member, friends, or even women you don’t care too much for, have no idea that you own said business... your business is probably failing or will fail. Period.
You ran your own business. Congrats. You correctly said not every business owner does things similarly. Also congrats on being correct. This has absolutely nothing to do with the fact that if you own a SUCCESSFUL business, there is virtually no chance someone who is close to you (however you define “close”) doesn’t know you own that business. Because that virtually defies all logic.

I guess I haven't been clear. I apologize for that. I will try to lay it out better.
I also don't know how we ended up spending so much energy discussing a comic. Perhaps it's because I was insulting in my earlier post. I also apologize for that.
There were many ways to classify the types of goals I saw among my clients, but one way to classify them was whether the client was looking to run a business or was looking to raise a business. About two thirds of my clients fell into the first group. They liked being involved in the business every day. They either liked being in charge, or they liked doing the work. I was in this last group--I liked running my business because I liked doing the work and I liked choosing my work. I never really liked being in charge.
One of my clients in this group was Eric. He ran a small, but highly profitable construction company. They mostly did roofing and he seems more like a crew chief than the owner of his company. He was pretty red-pilled. For example, in the winters he would take Friday's off to go snowmobiling with his brother. He told me he always had a great time, but he learned to tell his wife that he really didn't have much fun and would describe any little difficulties they had as if they ruined the whole trip for him. She would get mad at him if she thought he was having fun without her, but she was perfectly happy as long as he was miserable when he was away from her. Eric's parents passed away when he was a teenager making his success all the more amazing.
About a third of my clients fell into the second group. They were looking to build a business with all the systems in place to run itself and generate passive income with little to no personal intervention. The Gerber book is about raising this sort of business. Very few of my clients were completely successful at this, but there were a few. These last two fell into two groups as well. Some were serial entrepreneurs which meant they liked to raise a business and then raise another one and so on. The acquaintance I told you about was like that. He wasn't a client of mine, and you wouldn't have known how successful he was by looking at him as he lived a modest lifestyle. He gave $7 million to our church anonymously, though, when we were building a facility, so he was doing OK. I only know about the gift because I was one of the treasurers at the time.
My favorite client, though, was a man named Bruno. He raised a high-tech business that did plasma alloy deposition. He grew up in East Germany on a farm, came to the U.S. and went into business. When he was 50, he found himself missing being with horses so he started a business, raised it over a period of about 7 years. Put all the systems in place so it could run itself and then busied himself with his horses. He passed away a couple of years ago, but his business is still earning income for his widow and she is still tending the horse farm (she was about 20 years younger than he, so she has lots of energy left). Bruno met his wife after he was done raising his business and all his family were either passed away or far away in Germany.
So what's my point? Either of these men could have hidden the fact that they were the owners of the company while courting their wives if they had chosen to do so. Let me be clear, I am not aware of any of my clients having done so, but it would not only have been possible had they chosen, it would have been easy.
As for you contention that it would be harder to hide a successful business and easier to hide a failing one, I think you have it backwards. Having been in both situations, I can tell you that when you business is doing well, you need hardly think about it. When it is failing, it is on your mind 24/7. It is always eating at you and it would be very difficult to disguise that you are the owner. At least it would for me. YMMV.
Having said all that, here's how I interpret the comic. The fellow has been burned before but he thought he found a unicorn. He has been careful to describe himself as "president" of his company, not owner because he doesn't fully trust her. When he says, "I kinda lost my job," I interpret that to mean that he finally trusted her fully and was about to reveal that he is the owner and is ready to let the business run itself and generate passive income.
To me, the least realistic part is the expression on his face in the last panel. It's too smug. I would picture him being in pain and saying those words to console himself.

I'm no CEO, but for me work stays at the office. No exceptions. No picking up the company phone(unless I'm on duty, which happens on a very specific schedule), no checking the company email. Once you punch out fro the day, work ceases to exist.
What about the tax stuff?
Don't you only get the right to share taxes with your partner after you're legally married?
