I can go either way on this. Its subjective. Effort to achieve goals, loyal to yourself and your friends and brothers. Same goes for caring.

Effort is cool when something is worth the effort.

The only person worthy is yourself. So yes, I care for myself, and I put effort into myself.

Not caring is one of the few things detaching me from this society and culture. I am a romantic at heart about everything, but this world doesn't reward or encourage it. I suppose the ultimate romantic would continue to be so even in the face of a postmodern, hedonistic, and nihilist society and I'm giving in in a way, but all it causes me is pain to care. I got really good at poetry, but have no one to really appreciate it or share that passion with. I like art, too, but the modern art world and modern poetry are terrible narcissistic garbage dumps.

It rewards the bad and chastises the good. You might respond, "if you really love it, you should do it for yourself." That may be true to an extent, but we're a social species who want to share our experiences and creativity with other people. Art is supposed to be a collective means to find or express truth, beauty, virtue, or the human experience. What good is it to produce and enjoy art on your own compared to sharing and participating with others?

Imagine if music or sports reflected the same ideas and you just had mentally deranged weirdos saying performance is subjective and trying to put shit above excellence. You are essentially having this to some extent already with the garbage that the mainstream music industry continually puts out and feminists trying to put women's sports on par with men's. The only reason music and sports aren't postmodern to the extent as modern literature and art is because they are far more popular and it's much harder to implement as grotesque performances in these domains are so much more obvious even to the untrained eye. It's much easier to say these words on a page or this paint on a canvas is subjective or even outright praise crap and put down genuine works than it is in sports and music.

*perhaps once I unwind from this society and culture, I can find things to care about for myself once again. Until I completely stop caring though, I can't get there without being influenced.

This is some prisoner's dilemma shit. If everyone cared and worked towards a common goal, then it'd work out extremely well and entire civilizations can be built and flourish. But if people are divided and work to achieve opposing goals, then nothing is achieved. Or if one person works hard while his neighbour doesn't care and takes advantage of the hard worker, then it doesn't work out and the diligent man would be an idiot to keep trying so hard only to be abused. And so no one cares anymore, since people are either lazy or disillusioned.

We're living in a time where we work hard to have half of our earnings taken away to support single mothers and lazy people, who then resent us for working hard and who therefore vote to take even more away from us to fund their hedony and degeneracy, all with the support of the establishment who claims to have our best interests at heart. We're being taken advantage of. This is the time to revolt, not to work for the benefit of a slavemaster who will never be grateful for our sacrifice. And we can revolt by simply choosing to walk away. So that is the path I choose.

Loyalty matters to some but it is seeming to become more rare. Then again in my mind, I have no problems with being polyamorous so I have a different concept of loyalty but to each their own...and I may be crazy :)
