I would say that children are an after thought, if a man has no resources to spare marriage wouldn't occur. I would give you the benefit of the doubt on your "not all women" if the ratio was 40-60 on either direction. You're right, they don't turn bad overnight but it's a good rule of thumb for women you haven't met.
