Black Hills and Badlands National Park.. they are about 50 miles apart, you can hit them both up in one trip, and if you go during the week in September and October you can find hotels for $40-65 per night in Rapid City, avoid all the crowds, and have a much more pleasant hike because hiking in the badlands much above 80 degrees F is not all that pleasant.

If you like to hike, you hit Harney (Black Rock) Peak, Bear Butte State Park, do the scenic byway south of Spearfish, and hit up Custer for the best Burger in the state. Custer is not far from the trailhead to Harney Peak so you hit up custer the day you climb harney peak, which starts at sylvan lake.

May, September, and October are the best months of the year to take vacations. The last week of August (Monday through Thursday, not labor day weekend) is the best week of the year to hit up the child friendly resorts. Less crowds. Less Kids. Cheaper prices. I was at Kalahari in Wisconsin Dells the last week in August the last 2 years now.

If you happen to be into motorcycles, this is one of the best parts of the country to enjoy it as well. Take highway 87, the needles highway. It also passes right by Sylvan Lake.
