According to the CDC, the obesity epidemic in the USA cost the nation $147 BILLION extra dollars in healthcare expenditures. That doesn't include money spent on non-healthcare-related costs: increased fuel for cars/buses/trains/planes, lost income at work as well as tax-funded disability checks, inconvenience of sitting next to obese person on bus/train/plane as they invade your space, etc.

Yes, there are some "fat but fit" people who have no health problems, but they are rare. Personally I have no problem with people letting their health go, provided they are saddled with all the extra costs of being fat. However thanks to all the handouts from the US national government, obese people spread their costs onto the non-obese people. These are YOUR tax dollars!

The proper approach would be to prevent obesity by educating people about healthy eating habits (during the 90's many people were taught that that people should eat 6-10 servings of starch per day, some people still believe that), encourage fitness, create an environment that encourages physical activity (bicycle lanes, sidewalks, playgrounds) and stop subsidizing harmful food additives (namely high-fructose corn syrup). I don't believe fat people should be bullied if they are trying to slim down. Rather they should be treated with the same compassion as a person with any other disease.

Alternatively, the US government could require obese people to pay proportionally higher healthcare bills, or allow hospitals to deny certain procedures to obese people. I believe the UK does something like this regarding hip and knee replacements for obese people.

Fat acceptance does the opposite! Bad health habits are being encourage and good health habits are being shamed. Worst of all, many of the "fat acceptance" feminists vote for more handouts from our wallets. It's just another aspect of "freedom without responsibility" and it is literally costing us money.

Just wanted to rant. The solutions I proposed won't be implemented because too many people would get their feelings hurt.
