I find this story hard to believe. While it's plausible, she'd be on the hook too as most married couples file jointly. During divorce proceedings she's forced to disclose all of her financial assets including the secret account that you can do audit. She probably has a card tied to the account or how is she spending the money? A good auditor will find stuff like that. Also cashed checks will show where they're cashed at. You have to deposit them somewhere - you can't cash them at Walmart since they're personal checks. Everything has an audit trail. He's rich enough to pay for a good lawyer and a good accountant to go through the books.

Almost the exact same thing happened to my father in law. Wife did the taxes and for the 5 years previous of their divorce, banked the checks into a secret account ( over 40k, he is a decent earner and knew he paid in about 7-10k/year so he never questioned it). Once she filed for divorce he did some snooping on FB and found a second FB account with her abbreviated first name and maiden last name. Then he did some serious digging and (she handled most of the small bills, phone, electric, cable etc) found he was paying for an extra phone on his plan. He called in and pulled all the messages from it and found out she had been cheating for 3+ years and scheming with her affair lover to divorce him right before the IRS called in (which they did right after the divorce went through) and take half his pension and annuity, worth over a million in total.

Thankfully he found all this (except the IRS stuff) before the paperwork was filed and stopped her plan from going through. Fast forward 7 years and $225k (fees are insane) later and he's got 7 more payments left to the IRS until it's paid off.
