A River Runs Through It and Other Stories This is not a light read. I read it about once a year. First story starts slowly with a long discussion of the intricacies of fly fishing and Montana, meanders into family life, then sucker punches you. Another story is about persevering in the face of bad decisions.

Spend the money on a Criterion Collection subscription. You may not agree with some of them politically, etc., but there are a lot of good films that were not moneymakers.

Quicken is a personal finance computer program that has been around for ~30 years. You can find older non internet versions on eBay. Get 2016 or earlier Home & Business or Deluxe. Things like Mint, YNAB, Quicken (now) require an internet connection. I use PC based programs because I believe any equipment that handles your finances should not be portable. A free Linux/Windows personal finance software (that has a steep learning curve) is GnuCash. It makes you understand accounting principles. I n…

Making money takes work, mental and physical. Keeping money takes work. Learn some financial software like Quicken (a good start, but your financial info is not private), you will grasp the basics and keep track of where your resources are. Read The Intelligent Investor. You have time on your side, use it. Our culture is based on consumption. Everything you buy, from toilet paper, a motorcycle, entertainment etc. will require your attention. Your attention is the most valuable resource you have.

Magnetic charging cables rated for your phone. Add data transfer for a little more cost. Buy more cables and adaptors than you think you need, the design is often proprietary and short lived. A dog. About $1000 a year.

I would suggest an Instant Pot. Cooks on autopilot. Get one with a stainless steel inner cooking pot. 6 qts or above. Rice is great, can cook frozen meat in 40 minutes.

I use a set that allow data transfer also. They are more expensive and require orientation. Make sure they are rated for quickcharge. Get more than you think you need. The design is often proprietary, the plugs/cables break, and the company that makes them may no longer be around.

As a southerner, I have always been mindful of the Civil War. The Confederacy fired first, defended the denial of freedom to people that were kidnapped and kept them in slavery to support a middle and upper class. I do not agree that is something you build monuments to.

STAY OUT OF POLITICS The riots are not about one man being killed by the police. It is not that simple. Unemployment, diminishing opportunities, people being cooped up for months by a disease they don't understand, our "government" pointing fingers at each other... More people are becoming aware that politics, homelessness, religion, etc. is as good a reason to put a boot on someone's neck as skin color to those with power that is threatened.

The number of people in the US with jobs below the subsistence level has been slowly increasing in the developed world since the 1970s. A decent economy, which is now gone, hid this growing problem. It will dawn on many of these workers who just lost their jobs (even if they are in short term subsidized unemployment) that another job is not coming soon, and if it does it will pay less. Millions of people in cities around the US. Do you suggest waiting for them to start forming tribes or pay them…

Start practicing deferred gratification. If you cannot afford it, in cash, don't buy it. Start saving, that is what a savings account is for. In the meantime, you can still shop for it and probably will buy a better choice when you do have the money.

Sounds like she is borderline stalking you. May be time to go to to a lawyer, pay a little for his opinion of what to do. Ask him about giving the police a heads up. By the way, if you do call the guy, do not let him know you are aware of the ex-wife and him. If you get to it, and you probably will, act surprised, tell him you are her ex and then move on to other topics. Let him drag info out of you, saying you don't think your opinion should matter...

Forget recipes. Learn how to cook. If you have that skill, you can take anything in the larder and make a meal. These are sources about making meals: Salt, Fat, Acid, Heat (the book) is a Rosetta Stone. For instance, after reading this book, I no longer see spices, I see flavors. America's Test Kitchen and Cook's Country are PBS shows that explain the why of how you prepare a certain recipe.

No one can predict the future, only approximate it. Things will change unpredictably, many will act selfishly in response. Read up on previous pandemics, post financial crash behavior. EVERY ONE OF US IS IN UNKNOWN TERRITORY. This is a NEW disease never before seen in the wild. What is the first thing you need in unknown territory? Intelligence, no pun intended. Information about its transmissibility, virulence, etc. is beginning to come together. We do not know how long it survives in and out of the body. We do not know if it can be carried by other animals. We do not know if it will lead to long term health problems. Here is what we know for sure: Civilization does not have …

Since you asked, he has been, just by neglect, shrinking many government departments. I do not think that is in many cases a bad thing, but... Example the first: Moved control of the US strategic national stockpile for a pandemic from the CDC to HHS (after the recent MERS and ebola outbreaks). Example the second: He has appointed Mike Pence, a man who is proud that he does not understand germ theory, to be in charge of dealing with this outbreak.

That was how we were able to compete with bigger, stronger species. Cultures harnessed this to create a basic unit called a family. The family is not being protected by our culture now, but the desire is still there. Accept this desire for belonging as normal and figure out another outlet for it.

Thanks. I appreciate the complement. I rewatch that movie at least once a year for the opening score and the Peck/Heston fistfight. I would pay a lot to see The Big Country on the big screen. I think of Once Upon a Time in the West in the same vein. To me, none of these movies have dead spots (except Rashomon, but I think that is because I don't know the culture.) I tried to avoid the "100 best" or Academy Award winners. There are good movies in those lists, but you already know them.

in a civilized society I shouldn't have to walk in any certain way Actually, you do, just like there are rules when you are driving. Look in the direction you are going and walk a steady pace just a little faster than the crowd in a straight line. If someone bumps you, say "Excuse me" and keep walking. Bumping into somebody is not an excuse for conversation. Your ethnicity is probably part of it, but walking like you know what you are doing parts the seas.

Where I come from, the behavior of thanking someone for a kind word is called politeness. However, social media is hijacking this impulse for marketing reasons. As a consequence, our dealings with each other are becoming more quid pro quo. Instead of being polite, this same behavior is conflated with reimbursement. Social media in its present form is poison.

The replies here and there reflect the isolation we have created for ourselves by congregating in the millions and cramming ourselves into concrete silos. There are too many humans crammed into too little space and the issues we are having with each other are self created.

A male view from the same post: I am a man, and in 2015 I went through some similar circumstances which, like you, led me to this path. Where we may differ is on the emotional level. Since there are a variety of ways to come to MGTOW, the reasons why one leaves are as varied. Some observe their surroundings and come to a conclusion rationally. Some emotionally. Some are longer term thinkers, some live in the moment. Some think women can be handled in controlled doses. Others think distance makes it unlikely anything will splash on them. This and more guides an individual's decisions. MGTOW respects that some will think a lesson learned by another man does not apply to them.

In short, yes, a bunch of them. To give up carbohydrates, you have to quit eating all plants. Essential used in nutrition means that your body cannot manufacture a particular chemical. Animals do not make carbohydrates, certain fats, and certain proteins. If you do not get them externally, you will have nutritional problems. Our modern diet is so altered that we have made processed carbohydrates and fats a large part of it. There is where the problem lies.

It is becoming acceptable for that pair bond to shift from female/male to female/male equivalent(s). In the US, hiking merit badge requires 5 10 mile and a 20 mile hike, along with one overnight camp. I taught that for 8 weeks in summer camp. Lost maybe 1-2 boys every week who were not up for 70 miles in a week. Lifesaving merit badge has rescue and distance requirements. EDIT In checking Wikipedia on requirements, it looks like there is a difference in flexibility in achieving ranks. US scouts seem to have a straighter line hierarchy, I did not see in the article.
