Get yourself in shape first. I mean seriously. If you can't do 20 pull ups, run 15km and do 100 push-ups, don't even bother trying to join. And be ready to get stationed in the middle of the Sahara for a few years.

I worked with a guy who’s son was in the French foreign legion (American btw). From what I was told a lot of men from you’re part of the world join and the community is fantastic for them due to the opportunity it presents. You need to quickly learn French (even though they say it’s not a requirement it will make life a lot easier). Get in great shape and go for it. The guy’s son has spent time in South America, Africa an Paris (after the attacks).

Do you benefit from the EU freedom of movement? If so you have tons of choices.

If you can't work in EU member countries it's a lot harder, but not impossible.

From what I've read the foreign legion is very tough if not brutal and people die through their "colleagues" and the training sometimes.

Soldier = cannon fodder anywhere in the world.

Do you or your family have any savings that they can lend you to make a move somewhere? (2-3k EUR)

I met a couple when I was stationed in Poland for an exercise last year. 1. You have very physically and mentally fit it’s possible. 2. Capable of learning French 3. Do not be afraid to deploy. These guys are France’s along with SF groups sent overseas to former colonies to help fight ISIS.

First of all, I have never been to the military but I wish I did.

I hate the feeling when I look back in time and ponder "what would my life be if I had applied for .... ". This is why I would say go for it. You can always decide otherwise before signing the papers. I mean what are you losing when you decide to apply? I don´t think much.

If you decide to apply then make sure that you are in top physical condition to pass the fitness test. Don´t try it half heartedly. Give it your best shot because they only take a handful out of a hundred.

I mean you only have to serve 3 years to apply for citizenship. Sure it will be long exhausting years but you will profit your whole life. I am from Germany and can tell you how great EU citizenship is.

I know that foreign Legionnaires are the first to join military action but it seems unlikely that a major is breaking out in the near future. Sure you could fight some rebels and so on.

I was in the past playing in my head to join the legion but I am nearly too old and nowhere near in the physicial condition to pass the test.
