when I was married, I refused. I kept my own bank accounts, and made her keep hers. we had one joint account where we put our shared money for living expenses.

Doesn't matter, unless you withdraw small amounts over a long period of time, and stash it someplace very safe (not in a safe deposit box or any account), they will find it during divorce.

If you travel internationally regularly, look at foreign banks. There's a limit of currency and monetary instruments of $10K per trip, if you don't declare anything above that amount to customs, they can confiscate it. If you travel frequently you can move quite a bit offshore legally with little scrutiny. There are other ways as well.

Close that account before she starts writing cheques. My ex wrote cheques on an empty account, I had to pay off the negative balance before I could close it(primary account holder).

My brother opened a savings account for his son a few months before divorcing the boy's mother. She moved out (cost him $1100 to finance that) and started spending money on stupid shit.

She could barely keep up with bills, so she drew $100 from my nephew's savings, which was a joint account. My brother had to close it and open one she had no access to.
