Here is another idea, if you can survive on 20k, why not earn more money, invest the rest and get a passive-income going. At some point you wont be able to compete with the younger people anymore and your employer will probably fire you.

Dollars are like rabbits. They can multiply very quickly if you know what you're doing. If you're paying 50% tax (in us) you're certainly up there on income. It'll be much faster for you to gain from investment than some of the lower earning people out there.

So I'd go for it if I was you. If you only need 20k a year bank/invest the rest.

that assumes that everything is going to stay lukewarm for you for the rest of you life. Yes, progressive taxation is a massive incentive killer, but it is balanced by the possibility of standing in a bread line or living in a homeless camp. get your shit together and plan for the worst. even if the worst never comes, your life in the meantime will be better for it.

I understand totally where you are coming from.

I did two intellectual degrees. My first jobs involved difficult work and long hours, but my mean employers paid me the least they could. I never understood how people could be short sighted and mean. I wouldn't behave in such a way if I had my own company employing people.

I live in a country which does have high taxes and some taxes which can be very high which aren't proportional to income. Every year the newspapers highlight the issue, politicans talk about solving it, but everything is a short-sighted kludge by dumb politicans. High taxes not proportional to income stay.

If I didn't have high taxes looming then I might actually have the money to start a family. Maybe pass some of my genes on to the next generation. But government and stupid taxes not proportional to income are not sorted out. I could move, but it just makes everything harder.

Look don't give up. Maybe choose an area where you could work for a company for a few years and then start up your own business.

Negative on the "ghost and coast" idea. You've got to think longer-term.

Work your ass off
Don't get fucking married
Live a frugal life. Don't buy shit you don't need that will depreciate in value.
If you do buy a house, buy something cheap and pay off the mortgage in less than 15 years. If you can't do that, you can't afford the house.
Corollary to the above: don't live in a super over-priced area like the SF bay area (if you're in the US). Plenty of good tech jobs in Buttfuck Nowhere where decent houses can be had for < $200K.
Never give a single penny to a woman. Ever. They'll clean your ass out.
Get to a "position of fuck you" by age 45 - 50 (or earlier if you're lucky), and then do whatever the fuck you want.
