Amen to this, brother. All those service charges really add up over the years. I'm not sure if schools still teach these subjects but I was lucky enough to pick up woodworking and electrical basics in high school and taught myself car maintenance through the years. That alone will save you thousands.

The most important asset is the attitude that you can fix it yourself rather than giving up and calling someone else in before you even try. With that you're halfway home- there's tons of forums and youtube videos on fixing or maintaining just about anything you could think of.

For example, two winters ago I was forced to rebuild the high-pressure water regulator to my heating system despite having no plumbing/heating experience. Middle of winter, no heat, no service techs able to get to me for days. Checked out the problem, found several online guides, ordered the parts overnight and had it purring like a kitten within 36 hours. The sense of satisfaction was immense. I highly recommend this philosophy to anyone to help with your wallet and your self-esteem.

The only caveat is something truly dangerous like high-amperage electrical work. If you don't know what you're doing, don't risk your life to save a few bucks.

I don't understand men who don't do this! I made as much from buying run down houses and doing them up each time I moved as I did from my job a lot of the time. Nobody really taught me anything, just figured it out as I went along

more power to you. look up vention1mgtow on youtube, he has the same mindset as you.

I'm not a mechanic type of a guy but more like the IT one (everything in IT, basically). I like to build my own stuff too on terms of that, from the ground up.

however, it might come to a point where I'll start fiddling around with actual hardware you do. I always craved it, unfortunately my circumstances wouldn't allow it now.
