It comes down to politics and need, I fear if she is HR, he is screwed. If his boss is on his side he might pull through, but nothing can stab you in the back than a vindictive woman.

Work hacks....

Arrive early, leave late - all within reason.

Make yourself invaluable. This means diversifying in the workplace where you can. Hopefully to more than one manager/supervisor.

Document everything. Get a little cheap daily diary calendar and notate your day - especially where a fellow "problem employee" or a supervisor with an axe to grind is concerned. Using company email too to document is a good move. Just BCC yourself in too - to a private email account. CYA 101.
