Debating shouldn't be about apologising for going your own way in life. If you've got goals or at least a significant hobby then pursue it because you don't owe anyone an explanation.

Most people dont know how to debate, they choosed a ideological side and defend it like a attack dog. Instead of debating them, you have to motivate them to change their point of view. Debating is a waste of time.

Go to 4chan or 8chan and visit the /pol/ boards. If you see a anti-abortion thread, then join it and debate for pro-abortion. If you see a pro-abortion thread, then debate for anti-abortion. Be a devils-advocate.

You will learn new arguments, how to attack a argument or how to defend a argument. Just remember, never show your powerlevel in the real-world, because most people in the real-world are still in the matrix.

Whats also important is to know your position inside and out, regardless of what it is. Don't be a Dunning-Krueger dumbass.

Even more important, as was pointed out in another comment, is to break out of the echo chamber and visit other places that are on the other side. Consider their arguments and come up with ways to defend against them. This is the mark of a good debater, listen intently to the counter arguments. Don't just passively wait for them to finish what they're saying so you can speak. In the event you agree with part of what they're saying, point that out in your rebuttal. "I agree with you that X is a problem, but I think Y would be a better solution for it because Z," for example. I've used this many times as a de-escalation tactic to great effect.

Also:

Remember to clearly delineate between fact and opinion.

Attack the idea, not the speaker.

Don't take anything personally.

Don't bother with subjective topics, like which musical genre is better or shit like that.

Don't get emotional, remain calm.

No namecalling.

Be polite and professional. If they fly off the handle at you, it just makes you look better.

If you don't have an answer, admit it. Don't try to bullshit anything. You'll come across as more respectable. "But what about that case in Illinois in 1953 where X happened?" If you aren't familiar with it, say so and ask them to explain it to you. In some cases it might even backfire on them because they thenselves only know the headline of it, not the details.

Its not necessarily to convince you're opponent, but the audience watching.

Ultimately, and most importantly, be stoic about the situation. Think about the situation from a third party, or objective perspective. Like a scientist observing nature.

TL;DR: Know your own position extremely well, listen intently to their counter arguments, be polite, be calm.

Speaking as someone who's been arguing online since the days of dial-up BBSes, 99.9% of the time you're not going to convince anyone of anything, let alone get them to acknowledge you've handed them their ass on a platter of facts and logic.

Debating on the Internet really isn't a skill worth trying to develop on it's own. If you find yourself doing it, and enjoy it, you'll get better at it.

TROLLING on the other hand is a gift that just keeps on giving. Ironically, the best trolling involves utterly divorcing yourself from the very facts and logic that would be central to a debate.

Quit being a whiny bitch, and go your own way. Your faggoty blue-pill simp acquaintances will either learn painfully from their own mistakes and wise the fuck up, or do the world a favor and go visit Anthony Bourdain for a long weekend of dying like a pussy and burning in Hell.

The first rule of MGTOW, is don't talk about MGTOW. The people you meet don't need to know your business. Keep that shit to yourself. Use the common lines that get you out of the spotlight where necessary, at least until you learn to debate better.
Information and facts are your friend. Know your subject matter forward and backward. If you speak from a point of knowledge you'll find yourself less anxious.
Do it. Practice makes perfect. Analyze previous debates, learn where you failed, and what you could have said, instead to turn the conversation your way.

3.b. Speak to people, individual, and groups. Get accustomed to speaking comfortably no matter the audience or size.

Temper yourself. When debating you should not allow yourself to get emotional, be dispassionate or you will lose.
Always try to debate from a point of understanding. It's far easier to gain momentum if you simply accept your opponent's point of view, and try to get them to reciprocate than to stonewall and just say you're wrong, and I'm right.

Those are my best suggestions.

As to the friend you lost.. Rewatch the Matrix again. Let that part about people being so hopelessly lost in the Matrix that they can't break free, and will even fight to protect it sink in. Some people just can't allow themselves to believe the truth, because that would mean that people who loved them lied to them their whole life, that there is no pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, and that fallacy of a happy little life with a picket fence, a wife in the kitchen, and kids on the lawn that they are chasing doesn't exist.

Spend more time on this sub and read comments mate. Also you don't have to debate anybody. You're going your own way which means you live your life with YOU at the center of it.

You can literally say "it's my choice" and nobody has the right to say anything. That being said the reason they try to debate you is because they are probably blue pilled and think you're wrong, although this sub (and others, mostly female centered ones) are chock full of what might be waiting for you on the other side where the grass APPEARS to be greener.

Shaming tactics are also common and you have to realize that it's a groupthink thing. I never went with the flow, always did my own thing, stood by my own opinions etc and always had to deal with backlash like this. It's "normal" because we're supposed to group up with people who have common interests, which enforces an "either you're with me or against me" kind of mentality. (Politics are proof of this, as even family members hate each other over different political views).

Also, debating is overrated.
