Introduction
What is the subconscious mind? Many of us have heard this buzz phrase and the notion of reprogramming it.
You may have seen the famous iceberg image or seen various YouTube videos featuring famous authors who offer techniques to reprogram the subconscious mind in as little as a few minutes. Now that may be possible, but in my experience, it's usually more of an in depth process where some background theory helps a lot.
After lots of trial and error, I have found a very effective, consistent, and successful method for reprogramming the subconscious that can be applied to any belief, habit, or goal - really to your entire self-image and way of life as a whole.
You can use this technique to turn tides in your favour. It will start to feel like you are riding an invisible wave, so to speak, that is carrying you towards your ideal destination.
One disclaimer is - this method is not imagination based. Imagination is also an extremely effective way of reprogramming the subconscious. But it's so awesome in and of itself that I will cover it in other videos/posts.
The Conscious mind
So lets begin by contrasting the subconscious mind with the conscious mind.
In this context, 'conscious' essentially means that which we are aware of. So the conscious mind is that little voice inside of our head, that for the most part, we are aware of and are actively engaged in utilising in some specific way - whether that be internally/conceptually or empirically, to interpret the world as presented to us through our 5 senses.
More specifically, it's the rational, logical, thinking mind. The voice we hear inside of our heads. And all the thoughts we have that, for the most part, we are aware of and are choosing on some level. Whether it be for decision-making, planning the future, mathematics, philosophy, or understanding something - any of those higher-order, cerebral type of activities.
All of that is the conscious mind.
The Subconscious Mind
The subconscious mind is bit trickier to understand because the whole problem is that that it's we can't point to it anywhere in our experience and we're not even aware of its existence almost all of the time. In many ways it's a mysterious, invisible and silent force.
So you might be wondering:
So what exactly is the subconscious mind? Where is this mysterious thing located? Is it is some kind of area in my brain, such as in stored memories? Or is it a spiritual, metaphysical phenomena that's somehow embedded in a deeper layer of first-person consciousness itself?
All of these are valid questions that can help to inform our understanding. But I've found that simplifying it is by using common day examples is an effective way to grasp the subconscious mind
So with that in mind, here is an interesting questions to ask yourself:
Every day, when you are brushing your teeth. Who is brushing your teeth?
Now before you say 'I am'. Look a little closer. Are you consciously brushing your teeth, or are your eyes merely looking at your face in some vague way whilst your body performs the motions of brushing your teeth? Or are you, as the conscious mind that is thinking thoughts, actually far away somewhere else, lost in all kinds of thoughts about your life or anything else.
Truly you brushing your teeth with the conscious mind would consist of internal thoughts like this:
"Okay, so I've got grip the brush and pull it up my teeth. Good. Now hold it there for 3 seconds. Good. Now move to the next tooth, always brush one at a time. A little less force, there's no need to press too hard. Oh look my gum is bleeding, I must not be brushing regularly enough. Okay now take the toothbrush to the bottom layer…" And so on…
There are many other examples, such as driving a car, swing a golf club, catching a fly-ball - these are covered in video.
Subconscious Programs
Okay so from this example, it's clear from these examples that the subconscious mind is akin to an automatic program that has be installed into you.
It bypasses the need for conscious thought or analysis. It simply boots up when triggered by a certain stimulus in the external world. And it has a powerful life-force of its own once it is launched.
But here's an interesting question, what is governing these programs? How were they put in place?
Well the program itself is a series of movements that are acted out by the body (or even the mind, if we're talking about automatic emotional responses and thought-loops). These movements are governed by beliefs. And beliefs are simply thoughts you like having. Whilst these beliefs and actions can be programmed in by repetition, e.g. like learning to brush your teeth until it becomes automatic, your most powerful beliefs (i.e. about your identity, the world and reality at large) are usually programmed a second way...
Your Wide Open Subconscious Mind
This second way is when subconscious programs are ingrained in your prior to you having developed a conscious mind. I'm of course talking about your youngest years, roughly between the ages of 0 to 5, where you're simply wandering around with a wide open subconscious mind and experiencing life. If what you encounter is traumatic in some way (and that is of course subjectively determined by you as your infant self), you develop a subconscious program that will be an active part of your from then onwards.
Whether these infant programs are advantageous or disadvantageous, true or not true (for you), you were programmed in some way, we all were.
For example, a toddler touches a hot object, get a little burnt and experiences an emotional shock. If its traumatic, enough, the child will learn its lesson for life. It is programmed never to touch a similar hot object again.
But during this original experience, there were no conscious thoughts. Only at a more mature age, can we dig in to see the actual beliefs that are implicitly holding that program together. For example, we might ask:
Why don't I touch hot things? Because it's painful and burns my skin. And why don't I desire that? Because it's unpleasant and could kill me.
And that's about the rock bottom. Most programs are rooted in beliefs that are trying to protect you in some way - whether socially disadvantageous, simply false, irrational, limiting or otherwise.
Why Change Is Hard
You will know this if you've ever tried to form a new habit. It's not simply the actions you're trying to change. You're battling against a subconscious program that thinks you are trying to threaten its survival.
This is why your body resists such changes, and the pull to go back to the 'normal you' is incredibly strong when making any change (especially big ones). Even if in reality the change is seemingly positive, such as trying to eat healthier, exercise more, be more confident etc. and there is almost no real danger, the subconscious mind does is not concerned with rational arguments.
Here's an excerpt from Dr Joe Dispenza's book Breaking the Habit of Being Yourself which hammers this home:
"95 Percent of who we are sits in the subconscious memory system, in which the body automatically runs a programmed set of behaviors and emotions reactions… this means that we will think the same thoughts, feel the same feelings, react in identical ways. Whether it's driving a car, brushing our teeth, overeating when we're stressed, worrying about our future, judging our friends, complaining about our lives, blaming our parents, not believing in ourselves, and insisting on being chronically unhappy, just to name a few… So a person may consciously want to be happy, healthy and free, but the experience of hosting 10 or 20 years of suffering and the repeated cycling of those chemicals of pain have subconsciously conditioned the body to be live out this habitual state… Think about that 5% of the mind is conscious, struggling against the 95% that is running subconscious, automatic programs…the 95% is so reflexive all that it only takes one stray thought or a single stimulus from the environment to turn on the automatic program again. Then we're back to the same old, same old - thinking the same thoughts, performing the same actions, but expecting something different to happen in our lives…The greatest habit we must break us the habit of being ourselves."
How To Reprogram Your Subconscious Mind With an Empowering Program
So finally we arrive at the place of taking practical steps to overriding undesirable programs with empowering ones. Here are the simple steps:
1. Select a single thing to work on, it can either be a:
- New habit - e.g. "I am so happy and grateful now that I am an early riser. When the alarm goes off, I always immediately jump out of bed with a zest and positivity for life"
- New belief - e.g. "I am so happy and grateful now that I am a confident, gregarious person who thrives in social situations. I make friends easily and people truly enjoy my company")
- New specific goal - e.g. "I am so happy and grateful now that I am earning X dollars per week.
2. Once you have identified what area of your life you're going to focus on, write a few sentences about it in a positively framed, present-tense way. The sentences will basically be new thoughts that you are attempting to crystalise into new beliefs which will then influence the behavior of the subconscious mind. See examples above.
3. Repeat your new program (i.e. your 1-4 sentences above) to yourself, over and over, every day.
Either by writing it down, 10 - 20 times daily. Or through my preferred method of recording it on your phone, adding background music, and listening to is like a song. Again daily.
4. As you do one of the above exercises, become emotionally involved with the words. Feel them to be true. Believe them into your reality.
After enough time passes, you will start to notice your life begins to change as your everyday actions change to align with the new program you are installing into yourself. This can take anywhere from 30-120 days, so prepare for a long-term commitment.
Congratulations, that's it! Enjoy your new self, bask in your achieved goals, savour your new life (:
What To Expect & Some Tips
- Start simple. One habit, one belief, one aspect of your self-image, one specific goal at a time. Just like with starting any new habit.
- Emotional involvement with the new program is key - without emotions, you are conditioning your body to live into a new state of being. You may as well be writing or listening to lines from the dictionary if there is no emotion involved.
- You will be compelled to new actions - that's the fabulous things. Once you build some momentum, it becomes an effortless process.
- You will feel uncomfortable at times - this is when the new program (A) is starting to butt-heads with your old program (B). They are both vying for power and are willing to fight to the death - after all two conflicting programs can't both live within you - you simply couldn't function coherently through life. This inner battle will be expressed as unexplained fear, anxiety, discomfort and it is completely normal. These emotions are a sign that you are doing something right. Simply hold on and preserver - it will definitely be worth it. Keep doing the practices daily without ever missing a day. And you will come out the other side as the new you.
- Lastly, have fun with it. Surrender to the process. Be flexible, joyful and lighthearted with it. Trying to track your progress with over analysis will likely detriment or hinder your commitment long-term. Instead double your efforts into feeling the joy of the new beliefs being true, of the new you having already been realised, in the present moment.
In summary, stay strong. Eventually the new you will emerge. You will naturally, automatically become empowered towards a life that is aligned with your new program. When that happens, it's one of the most freeing, rewarding, and beautiful feelings in life. Plus you will have tangible new results in life to savour too - whatever these end up being for you.
Good Luck!
