The entire anti-vaxx movement is predicated on the idea that a bunch of do-nothing moms somehow are more knowledgeable than the entirety of the modern medical establishment.

Goes without saying the reason we're seeing formerly extinct diseases becoming common again isn't because the best and brightest are calling the shots.

One time, I was working a normal shift in the local hospital's lab, and the results are completely normal, which isn't surprising since most tests are of a routine procedural nature and are just done to cover bases and rule out possible diagnoses. Without giving specifics or naming names (since that's an uber-no-no in the medical world), it was only when I went to register the results into the hospital's network that the absurdity kicked in for me. Typically, when you go to log results you see a bunch of identifiers for the patient in question, so that you know for sure the results match up and you're not giving one patient the results of another; that results screen also shows presumptive diagnoses or some blurb that summarizes why the patient is in the hospital being seen. This patient, who had completely normal results was a 12 year old boy with the hippiest name I'd EVER seen (like, you know those people who say they have 'old souls' and call themselves dumb shit like 'Rainbow Jasmine'[not patient name]?), and the diagnosis was 'stuck a Lego block up his nose'. That basically clicked it for me: this was a boy who was at the mercy of his probably single mom, who named him the most dumb thing possible, probably told him his whole life that he was an 'Indigo child', and that he probably hadn't eaten a single piece of meat in his entire life. He'd probably been raised so poorly that it's no wonder at the age most children are in middle school, he's stuffing object up his nose; and of course since it CAN'T be the mother's fault the kid's a cretin she probably insisted that every test under the sun be done to make sure she's got a scapegoat, when really the only thing that needed to be done was take it out with some forceps.

When you work in this industry, you see stupidity like this more often than you're comfortable with.
