Basically, I'm a pseudo second-year student at uni in a small eastern European country(let's call it "E"). With pretty good name recognition. I said pseudo second-year because I failed one too many classes last year chasing NAWALT. You can take one guess how that went... But I was allowed to retake them and take second yeat classes as well.

Although it tanked my confidence it wasn't as big of a deal but now I'm in constant catchup with my peers so I have befriended a couple of freshmen.

Onto my predicament, when doing my research on which uni to go to, my uni was highly praised, a well-known name in my region etc. But in reality, their courses weren't updated in years and have only now started updating them after it was announced that uni dropped 100 places in world rankings. And updates are done poorly, by people who have no idea of the job market and or how to teach. All of the new TAs and professors are older students straight out of masters programme and haven't worked a day in their lives.

  1. Reasonable classes are now unpassable with fail rates of 70%.
  2. They change the requirements every year. So it's a lottery how hard would it be.
  3. Proprietary software for taking tests, and you out of luck if you fail due to their error.
  4. It's 2k euro per year

I don't want to waste my years with a volatile institution so I was looking into other universities.

Uni "R" is a little bit closer to where I live right now but is more expensive at 3k pre year. I've looked into their curriculum and it looks fine. 3kk covers books and admin stuff, whereas I have to pay for all that on top of 2k tuition. "R" offers scholarships to all students with GPA higher than 8.5/10, whereas "E" is a bloodbath trying to get one.

I'm going to talk to the uni "R" next week, but from what I have gathered they will honor 90% of classes I have taken at "E". I will also be meeting with two of my friends, one is currently enrolled at "R" and other switched from "R" to "E", to have a talk about "R".

The main point is that while looking at trends in the west, I don't want to be a coding monkey at an outsourcing firm, and want to learn technologies that are a standard in the field, not something that was used decades ago.

Also if someone is in the Security side of CS, how did you get into the field? Was a masters degree a requirement? What are your thoughts on the matter?
