I think this moreso has to deal with how autistic individuals deal with their dearth of social interactions offline by going online.

The offline world refutes heavily that imaginative component. Yet the online world if enough believe they can build their echo chamber to support such beliefs and then over time everyone believes they are really mermaids by communicating only with persons who think you are also one.

Its interesting because it hints at how humans thought of speech as language and social cues developed.

Of the multiple people with autism or asberger's I've met, none think like this. This is the tumblr mindset that made these conditions a joke in society and hurt people that actually needed help.
