It's important not to take Machiavelli out of context. Otherwise he comes across as someone advocating for evil masterminds.

He isn't. The Prince is a manual on how to attain and maintain power. Not just political power, but personal power. At any level.

He teaches that people are flawed and are predictable creatures, governed by certain patterns. Sometimes to play that game you have to do bad things, but even then there are rules. Such as

(Paraphrase) "If you have to do Bad things, try to do them all at once, rather than draw them out. Otherwise people will hate you."

Most of the time he emphasized being a Good man and a good ruler. But acknowledged that sometimes you need to get your hands dirty and do questionably things in order to succeed.

In doing so you need to keep perspective and treat those things like distasteful but necessary chores.

Great book. It's also important to realize he wrote it while in Jail as a way to flatter and basically bribe a powerful man into releasing him. Take all things in context and with a grain of salt.

Fear lasts longer than love. And love doesn’t even exist, love only exists based on the premise of what you can provide for someone or something.

The prince and other writings is a great book, highly recommend it plus art of war condensed version that covers al other main points
