JRR Tolkien was married to the same woman for 50 years; they also had 4 kids together. Maybe it is a reference to marriage, but I doubt it.

I do know that he wanted to see the end of the British Empire and generally attested war (from his experience in WWI), so maybe there is a link in there somewhere.
