Feminist Gloria Steinem penned an essay on Marilyn Monroe. She quoted MM as saying:

“I have always had a talent for irritating women since I was fourteen,” Marilyn wrote in her unfinished auto-biography. “Sometimes I’ve been to a party where no one spoke to me for a whole evening. The men, frightened by their wives or sweeties, would give me a wide berth. And the ladies would gang up in a corner to discuss my dangerous character.”

At 16, MM married 20 y.o. police officer James Dougherty), right before he enlisted to go to war (WWII). When he came back, she divorced him (1946). This is around the time her career started to rise. She then married Joe DiMaggio (1954-1955), followed by Arthur Miller (1956-1961). In 1962, the year she died of an alleged overdose, she was rumored to be JFK's casual mistress.

Essentially, MM traded up throughout her life. The sad part is that MM is seen as a bigger influence on women, then say, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis. At least JKO tried to portray the family life, although she too, had multiple partners.
