I'm in one of the states where it's mostly purple with a couple of spots of dark green. The green areas map tightly to the native-american reservations on here.
Likewise, I suspect that the dark green areas in Mississippi and Alabama map tightly to where high density of african-americans.
So, you're right about cultural norms.
