Depends on your definition of "MGTOW" or "MGTOW friend."
--
-- Now technically speaking, one can debate whether the "divorcees" are truly "MGTOW" -- proof often lies in the future... when/whether they remarry and/or seek out some other "cohabit" relationship with women -- alas (more's the pity) this DOES seem to be the most likely/common end result for the majority of divorced men (like a dog to vomit...)
* By "lifelong" I mean never married (formally or otherwise {no "cohabit/common law" type things}, never a "baby-daddy" etc; may have had "dating" LTR's but most emphatically not ever "divorce raped" (no alimony, no child support, etc) -- and most likely NOT actively "dating" either -- usually this means mid-30+ or even 40+ age group (sorry, but younger guys are usually still stuck with at least one foot in the "blue pill" mythos, still trying/hoping to find "the ONE" to fulfill that married w/children fantasy -- and as a result they DO still occasionally bring up women, particularly after a "breakup" {which of course is often the only time you see them, since whenever they are actively "dating" they are AWOL from your friendship activities}).
** If there WEREN'T / AREN'T any kids from the marriage (and/or the guy has major enough revenue stream such that he gets remarried and/or into some new cohabit relationship, same thing really) -- then at that point (new relationshit), the "shitfest" about his ex (and/or women in general) usually ceases. These guys are often (at best and only under the broadest definition of "MGTOW") really only "temporary MGTOW" -- that is their statements of "I'm DONE with woman, etc." are often a sort of emotional/psychological "reaction" (and one that happens perforce rather than "by choice") and aren't necessarily a fully "rational" calculated commitment to being/remaining a "confirmed bachelor" (i.e. as a "life-plan").
** Initially I was going to say it usually takes about a "decade" post divorce for this (the "obsession" with discussing their ex/ranting about women in general) to end... but really, that isn't true; it may be the "median" time, but much depends on the individual circumstance.
The reason(s) that "about a decade" (give or take a year or three) SEEMS like it's the norm -- or at least a common duration of the "obsession" -- is because that's generally how long before their kids reach full adulthood -- i.e. the length of time divorce-raped guys are stuck paying some exhorbitant "chilimony"; and/or dealing with split custody/visitation, etc. (And so it is sort of understandable why -- to them -- it is still a PRESENT issue that's in front of their face {daily, weekly, monthly}; they're still stuck/locked-into dealing with the aftermath, and often major negative impacts {financial and otherwise} of their former relationshit... even if they want/try to "let go" its still a present part of their life.)
Alas, after that is done (i.e. the "chilimony" period is over) -- it isn't uncommon for someone who had SEEMED to be a "die hard MGTOW" to... you guessed it, suddenly run across a new "unicorn" (see this one is DIFFERENT); and thus they begin the process all over again (unfortunately with even LESS chance of success than the first time around).
