Ham on Rye, Post Office, and his poetry compilations are all worthwhile to read. Buk was a legend.
'Women' and 'Pulp' weren't to my liking either.
Ham on Rye, Post Office, and Factotum were the top 3. A great book that influenced him was Ask the Dust by John Fante which I really liked.
Buck also wrote a book titled Hollywood about his fame as a writer and his deal with writing the screenplay BarFly. Kind of cool, but not as good as the three I listed above.

He was the most realistic writer in terms of not being “writerly.” In Post Office he says “She was a big girl. What I mean by big was that she had a big ass and big tits and was big in all the right places.” So unlike writers who say “The Sun rose languid in the sleepy sky as the clouds nestled in the valley for another night...”. He wrote from the gut. You might not like it but he was a watershed writer.

Yea, this. People like the Bukowski story. Ugly guy who slaved away at the post office, degenerate gambler who bought prostitutes, succeeds as writing late and life and is a character that drinks a lot and creates giant upsets giving lectures are colleges. He was a hoot.
The reason he's great has minimal to do with his writing imo, though I have since checked his poetry and it isn't bad. He is great because he accepted who he is so thoroughly that the world noticed. That's my take on it.
Not to shit on a great artist for his art entirely. There is country music that does quite well and I don't give two shits about that, either.

Yeah there’s a technical aspect to art that takes both practice and some element of what we call talent as a catch all for making all the good aesthetic judgment calls during creation -
but there’s also something about the humanity of an artist being able to simply express the experience of being in the world that makes people drawn to that person and their story. That’s more of what i would call “charisma” and a manner of living with as little to no societal inhibitors like, the need to impress others or the desire for approval.

Uncle Hank, one of many uncles I've adopted in my time on this planet. His writing captured a certain aspect of depression. A certain kind of ultimate desperation and loneliness. From the very first time I saw his poetry, I knew he was the real deal. I've lived a span of my life quite a lot like he did and I have to say, I have no idea how he did it or how he reached old age living that way. I could never keep up with him. I highly recommend Ham on Rye, which is basically a sort of 'fictionalized' autobiography of his childhood and teenaged years. Factotum and Post Office go over the jobs he had and the things he did before he had great success as a writer. Crucifix in a Death Hand is one of my favorite pieces from him. There are also some great recordings and interviews with him on Youtube, and some recordings from his recitals which often took place at college lecture halls and had all kinds of insanity and debauchery going on. He'd always call out the crowd and yell at people if they interrupted him. Tom Russell mentions him a lot in his music, too.
