Besides the excellent points in here about single mothers and a focus on college prep, I think there is one more factor.

Things are made to be disposable now. A lot of stuff can't be opened; it is glued or riveted shut. No user serviceable parts. More things are electronic as well, or have a high electronics content. Without a schematic, these are difficult to troubleshoot (all the more so if the boards are conformal coated.) Your car - do you have a CAN bus analyzer to read the traffic between modules? A diagnostic reader to plug in, like a shop does?

When it comes to home repair today's spec housing is probably not much more difficult to fix than stuff in the past. Although houses they are not built to facilitate repair as well as houses in the past, sociological explanations are probably more relevant.

Surely the loss of such skills are due to the feminisation of our schools? Everything has lurched to the left, and classes that teach the fundamentals of worshipping women (such as how a woman can be deemed to have granted consent) take precedent over woodwork, etc. Plus feminised boys are less inclined to get their hands dirty when they can orbit the hot chicks in Home Ec.

Oh I CAN TELL YOU EXACTLY WHAT THE FUCK HAPPENED, None of us were raised with our Fathers, I know I wasn't and so all the small useful shit I've learned to do had to come from others peoples dads and my grandfather who tried his best to teach me but that man was old so he could only do so much. Seriously that is one of my pet peeves is that no fault divorce and stupid feminist assholes took those bonding moments from me, fuck them. I didn't get to do shit like this with my dad and I know a million others like me who would of liked to, even guys with shitty dads knew at least having a dad was better than not

Where did you learn how to do theses things? I wouldn't know how to do any of that stuff either. I just never had a reason or opportunity to learn how.

Some of men like me have been provided like a deadbeat dad who kinda didn't teach me anything. But we do have something called the internet. Watch some videos and learn to fix.

I don't get it why men love fixing things but it gives me that 'tranquil and peaceful' feeling.

A lot oof stuf can't be user repaired. The reasons that account for this may be comples but, feminism has to be at the bottom of it.

Use of exam scores as the measure of Intelligence and creativity, while neglecting the vocational skills that children needs. Employment of women in schools, who underplay practical skills while underlining the concept of "good degree=good life". Well at least these were the ones I experienced first hand.

I have noticed this too. I did not have many of these skills until I started to enjoy developing them. My dad used to do a lot of woodworking, so I did observe and learn some of his tricks, but in hindsight it was mostly a way for him to retreat to his shop with a bottle of wine and be away from my mother. Anyhow.

I have noticed a lot of people are afraid of making mistakes, generally, not just in DIY. This is what kept me from tinkering and learning serious DIY skills for a long time until I decided to build my own house. At first I had quite a lot of help, of course. Especially in paperwork, planning and conforming to regulations. I had help in getting all the materials en laying the foundation. As the work progressed I would do more and more. Once the house was built and the roof was done I did all the rest on my own. Electrics. Plumbing. Tiling. Laying the floors et cetera. It took me the better part of a year, but I learned so many things and gained so much confidence in my abilities and my ability to learn new abilities. It was a very worthwile thing to do. And one thing I learned from it: You can not really fuck up. You can and will make mistakes, but you can correct them. Worst case: You start over with a new workpiece, you fill the hole and drill another, you throw out a tile and get another one. There is not really anything that you can not solve with patience and determination.

Now, I regularly do woodworking and home improvement projects. Just for the fun of it. My job is very demanding in a mental sense. I am lucky I can balance it out with doing stuff with my hands.

I went to a woodworking show not long ago, and while it was great, it was sad to see all the guys there were 50+. Almost no young men at all, its a dying art.

My Dad enjoyed woodworking, and I learned a lot from him. I can see how a lot of guys today with no Father in the household would miss out on a lot of that.
