Everything here was supposed to disappear. Banned subreddits, deleted communities, cancelled blogs — much of what is archived here survives nowhere else.

It stays free — no paywall, no account — for the next man who comes looking, the way it was free for you.

I have no idea what that is besides "fancy radio thingie" with lots of bright lights and buttons and knobby bits.

So I'll say "coool man" and upvote.

The big feature in this Transceiver is the "Radio Spectrum Water Fall", shows at a glance where all the signals are in a given Band Segment, no need to Scan Channels hoping to "hear" something.

Ham Radio - loads of fun, Talk to the World from your easy chair.

I can do that with Discord and a cell phone. (Former ham here: let my license expire and never bothered to get it back...)

sigh, too bad ol' man.

I don’t know anything about receivers but that shit looks cool.

I have thought about getting in to Ham radio. Is it expensive to get a descent setup ?

[–]m5ufo 2 points3 points4 points 7 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

For the UHF & VHF bands, cheap handie-talkies run $40 new... China has flooded the market with cheap, and for the price decent, hand-held radios - both Ham and Commercial. This is all FM stuff, local Radio to Radio and Radio to Repeater operation. 144MHZ and up.

For the higher grade licence holders, the "Low Bands" are available too. My favorite is 80 Meters, voice subband is around 3700 Khz to 4000 Khz. I enjoy the "Single Side Band Mode" or SSB Lower Sideband as its called. Most nights I work the local group ~20 different stations with a max distance of about 2000 miles from my home.

I often work stations in both Las Vegas and Seattle from Northern Calif on 100watts, using my existing ICOM 718.

Used ICOM 718's go for about $500, new ~$700.

Thanks for the info.

Man that's cool. I like the idea of being able to talk to anyone in the world without having to pay a subscription. It seems like a very practical hobby too.

OMG it's a radio computer... you kittens have it all. We had to build our gear from tuna cans, "vitamine q" capacitors and thermionic valves... do you need a license for that? just curious.

[–]m5ufo 1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Yes - an amateur radio license is required, but its fairly easy to get one. Tests are multiple choice about radio theory and whatever bloody rules they ask. The question pool is on the web and sample tests can be found at qrz.com for a given license class. No more morse code btw.

No more morse code btw.

since 2012 if I remember correctly. the decision to abolish morsing requirement is still a hot-button issue in my circles. most ham nerds I know still do it. there are regular competitions and knowing how to morse can still get you a lot of prestige.

There is a real following for CW. I had to do it to pass my 5 wpm code test in 1987. Made a few CW contacts as a novice class, but never liked the mode. I like the rag chew so much more.

[–]schemadrome0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I take CW as "carrier wave morsing", right? I did not know that Marconi is back, but I like it. I don't know "rag chew", though.
