I'm nice to everyone I encounter and give people the benefit of the doubt always, but I will not have anyone, male or female, walk over me. And no one has. I think it's worked well for me as I've gotten older.

Why shouldn't you be a gentleman? It seems like not being nice to others is not a decent and civil behaviour. Being nice to people doesn't mean you're a pushover. In fact I believe the opposite is that one lives and is consumed by fear, hate, and anger, and that is not being free.

A gentleman is a gentleman, a doormat is a doormat. The weaponization of language is a shitty tactic that feminists in particular favor, changing the definition of things to suit them. Abuse can now be financial by definition (withholding your money from women), everything being some variation of rape, etc.

There are plenty of reasons to be a gentleman, including your own mental well being through behaving in a pleasant manner. Our behavior has a massive effect on our perception of reality. There are no reasons to be a doormat.
