The other big problem with people so optimistic of driver-less cars is that people are not considering what sort of accommodations these vehicles will need to actually function on the current infrastructure. It would cost literal TRILLIONS to change the Infrastructure of the current US road systems to allow for automated vehicles and human operated vehicles to be on the same roads. It's just not going to happen, at least not for a VERY long time.

Even if the technology is there, the current groundwork in place would not allow for it to be used en-mass in large scale commercial applications. I honestly think the best we will see by 2045 would be small transport vehicles for shipping stuff back and forth to be the best we see by that point. I'm usually an optimist when it comes to some things, but there is just no logical reason to believe this will just magically start coming together, there will be no Todd Howard "It Just Works" magically fixing all of the various logistical problems that plague this driver-less vehicle dream vision.
