On the surface of it, owning a personal residency seems like it can be a wise decision if you have a stable job. Has home ownership worked out for you all here? Or has it not? I have been watching different videos: Peter Schiff, Aaron Clarey, and even Dave Ramsay say to rent until you can buy a house cash. The advice from my family has been to get a stable job, save for an emergency fund+20% and then buy within your means.

Being in California, I'm looking to move out of state to say, North Carolina, Texas, or Utah when I purchase a house. But the hidden fees is what scares me: HOA, Property Taxes, Maintenance. How do you calculate that all into the equation? Is renting really more expensive even considering this?
