It's a neurochemical reaction hikacked from the mother child bond. Purpose to strongly tie 2 genetically unrelated individuals for the purpose of bringing up a human child who would be otherwise helpless until around the age of 4-5 years.

After which it slowly fades away and the individuals break off. The man would seek for the most fertile woman his value can afford and the woman would find the most successful man her value can afford.

Rinse repeat. Window period for females 15-45, for men 15-65 thereabouts.

A hunter gatherer male bonds to his woman to keep her and his offspring fed and protected even when she has passed the child bearing phase and is in child rearing one (the wall). He need never change his allegiance unless they die and he needs to start over.
A woman, however, must change her allegiance very quickly if her male is killed or incapacitated or she and her existing children will promptly starve.
The problem is that modern women are not seeing the male bringing home the food as we are now several steps separated from killing and bringing home and their bonding trigger is not sustained and they relapse back into the 'acquire a new mate' mode.
