I once dated a hot girl who considered herself an "empath" (she was into astrology, another red flag). She was ultimately the most selfish, demanding, greedy cunt i was ever in a relationship with. But yet delusionaly thought she was a super caring kindhearted person.
Therein lies the difference. Genuine empathy leads to kind ACTIONS. Being SENTIMENTAL and EMOTIONAL are not empathy. Ultimately they just mean one is a crazy selfish person as opposed to a regular selfish person. I say this for the young men browsing this sub. BEWARE the appearance of a kindhearted "sweetheart". It only makes the eventual backstabbing that much worse later. Been there done that.

Exactly. The chart shows bunch of examples of negative emotion and poor emotion regulation. If you try to date someone who got 'empath bingo' you're in for a whirlwind of trouble, severe attachment issues and probably cheating. Also people who emphasize how 'empathetic' they are usually are not.

Sounds like you also have experience with this!

Oh yes ... my ex keep calling her self empathetic and pointing out how she feels other's auras when she walks into the room and how she's too empathetic because she takes on 'too much' of other people's worry. But in reality she's borderline and doesn't know who she is - to the point of being sociopathic.

Oh gawd, the "auras". Probably into a bunch of pseudo science health shit too. It seems to go with the territory.

yup the crazier they are the more 'spiritual' which includes all kinds of dumb shit like auras, chakras, homeopathy, crystals, astrology, palm reading, etc etc

This is weird to say the least. I consider my self an empath. All this really means is a person with empathy, although probably more than others. I think most people have empathy. There are some exceptions. Those in Cluster B are very low in empathy if they have it at all (psychopath/antisocial).
Like, who doesn't like to be around water? Who has never cried to music? Yes, people tell me amazing things. There's nothing wrong with seeking spirituality. Yes, we can be taken advantage of quite easily by others.
But some of these are not traits of an empath but are the traits/tricks of the narcissist. Identity crisis, acting different around others are 2 big ones.
Of course, its very difficult to tell the difference between an empath and a narc because the narc always seems to 'act' the part as we really can't read their true thoughts/feelings. A lot of this is because they dont reall have any. Their feelings and thoughts are low level. Most are low in intelligence and seem like moody cry babies. And they are, but only in the sense that they are very emotional until the get what they want and then all of a sudden the mood changes. Very much like the child in the store throwing such a tantrum that you'd think it's dying and then you give them the treat they wanted and 2 seconds later they are all tired and calm and seemingly happy/content.
Being 'in touch' with your emotions isn't 'empathic', especially when they are completely out of control. This is where women get it mixed up.
Women often feel more 'threat' than men do. A big part of this is low testosterone. You are walking by, you look and say hi simply as a reasonable intereation with a person on the sidewalk that you are getting closer too and want to signal 'no threat here' but their brain immediately signals 'threat' to them. They don't like to feel weak so they deny this feeling and deny owning it so it must be HIM.
Then their brain asks "what does he want" and as most women only have sex to offer, their simple little brain goes 'he wants to fuck me'. When you combine that with the feeling of fear, it becomes he wants to take advantage of me or rape me or is plaing some weird mind game.
The 'mind game' assumption is a projection too. Thats how they get through life so they assume everyone is playing a mind game. And it's not like we aren't, in a weird way. We're saying 'Hi, just a person here, no threat, have a nice day!' in an attempt to quell any anxiety they have. But that set off an alarm too. They figure "Bullshit, hes not nice, he wants something, he's a trickster because he just wants to fuck me.'
This is also a self fulfilling ego boost for them, provided the guy is either reasonably attractive or perceived to be of no threat at all like a guy in a wheelchair, this makes the woman feel wanted and attractive, so of course they want to believe you're attracted to them.
It's a fucking mess. They are nervous anxious little creatures that are under like no fucking threat at all, but they feel it nonetheless and for them 'feeling is believeing'.
Since they had the feeling, and their confirmation bias tol them they were right because they wanted to be right, then they think they are 'empathic' and have 'high intuition' and 'emotional intelligence'. It's fucked because they can never be wrong.
But the second they feel like they might be wrong, panic sets in. Their world view and ego could be shattered if they stay there too long so they freak out again and move away from that feeling... the one that was going to lead them down the right path. This is why they never learn and remain children their whole lives.

You may be overthinking this thread.

If they themselves brag about being an empath, then yes. I agree.
A true empath wouldn't sit there and tell you how empathic they are, unless they realized they were speaking with another empath.

empathy like intelligence is observable phenomenon - no need to say it unless you lack it
[–]mgtow-zen1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Exactly. Well, I can think of one reason:
You want to con someone.
