Question regarding VPN

A VPN allows you to use the public internet to connect two private machines as if you were on a private network, virtually (hence the name).

For example, you have two computers on your desk. You could just plug network cables into them and communicate from one to another, but if your other computer is somewhere else on Earth you can use the public internet to allow those two computers to connect as if they had a wire between them.

This is done using encrypted communication channels and various security techniques between the two allowing you to create your own tunnel through the internet between them.

Why do we care?

Because you can use it to get around all sorts of region specific issues, shield your activities from others, etc. like you're suggesting.

So what's commonly done, is that you rent some VPN time from a company to tunnel into their server, which you can then use to communicate with some other resource you want to access, without your activities being easily tracked.

There are lots of VPN companies out there, some free, some at low cost, where someone might know you use a VPN, but not know what you did on it.

Of course this in no way protects you if you're giving out your real information everywhere you go, so you have to mix that with not leaving PII all over the place.

Does it cover your tracks? Somewhat, it allows you to do things like watch Netflix for example, which might be blocked where you are. That doesn't hide that you have a net flix account, just shields the final connection between you and the VPN server and that you were watching netflix and the nature of the data between the two.

I'am using PIA VPN Client (on 4g and my ISP internet cable). It costs to me very low. About 4$/Month. It's very good, stable and fast.

You should be safe as long as you use anonymous accounts online and don't divulge personal information.

But go for VPN if you feel the need for complete anonymity.

For some reason I read VPN but was thinking VLAN and I was a bit confused :)

Hotspot Shield used to be a really good one with a trial period of a few days. Worth looking into if you're on a Windows machine.

VPN isn’t for hiding your IP. It’s just a private tunnel through the cloud. Depending where your transition point is, the IP of the gateway will be disclosed. Use proxies. You’ll find kind of ninja surfing utilities on the web.

Using Private Internet Access at the moment mainly for torrenting and its pretty good. You want a VPN that basically has zero logging of activity. In theory a VPN company that is situated in certain country's like America can hand over its data if served with a warrant, but if there's no logging then they wont have much to hand over.

A VPN will make your connection slower, so depending on what your internet is like this might be a problem or not. Try different providers to see what works best. Apart from torrenting its just nice knowing my data isn't being mined by my ISP or Google.

As for the providers Private Internet Access is probably the cheapest decent one. Other more expensive ones which get good (or better) reviews are Nord VPN, Express VPN, CyberGhost, VyprVPN and IPVanish. There's other decent providers as well but these seem to be main ones.

There's quite a few reviews out there that you can mooch at if you want to compare them. If you do opt for one I would just do a monthly payment first time round just to see how well the service runs.
