I, surprisingly, disagree.

I think our basic nature can best be seen in our children who, by and large, have to be taught how to be shits.

In fact, even with all the pressure society puts on us to be shits, a majority are actually decent human beings ( men and women ).

However, the shit heads do tend to ruin that for the rest of us.

Take this with a grain of salt.

Our basic human nature holds qualities that encompasses the universal traits of good and evil. Those traits consistently clash depending on our environment, ranging from cultural factors to things like class, and your individual desires.

Many of these said traits can be HEAVILY affected by society. The invention of technology that has made everyday life much, much easier has also in turn made people value hard work less.

Social media gives certain people(aka the majority of women) an endless source of validation and resources via men and other women, so relationships may no longer hold value to them, at least not anything long term unless it's a status jump in some way.

In truth, our good and evil qualities are affected by our environment as well. It's our nature to care, and it's our nature to be selfish.

What takes over is entirely dependent on an individual's notions.

So yes, people can be shit. But surprisingly, they can be good too.

Our problem with society is that those good individuals tend to not have the things that we men, as a human species crave the most:

Money, power, and women.

This leads to the clash of their darker sides, wanting to obtain those desires but confused on whether or not to compromise their personal morals to obtain it.

absolutely. society and civilization suppress our base nature. it's the only thing holding it all together. we're animals who will do what it takes to survive and propagate our genes at the expense of others

and the majority of people will disagree, but it's necessary that they disagree. if everyone saw how humans truly were we'd all have no incentive to even pretend to treat each other well

Our base nature is neither good nor evil. It's primal.The problem with being cynical is it ultimately leads to distrust, anger, and hatred. Not only of others, but of oneself. The trick is to balance that healthy cynicism with kindness and understanding of the human condition. That is, we all suffer and cannot escape the reality of life and death.

Idk if our true nature is shit or if our current, overall actions and proclivities as a species are simply products of what we have considered, for a very long time, to be normal.

As long as men, on a mass scale, continue to completely bow their wills to women for women, decadence and the consumption of material pleasures (the most common factors involved in attracting women) will rule us as a species.

Whether this is a good or bad thing I cannot say, but I do wish it were somewhat different. We need harmony between the sexes to truly progress as a species in my very humble opinion.

Good and bad, Right or wrong are man-made concepts. I think the argument for "universal morality" or "instinctive morality" is completely baseless.

We do what we have to do in order to survive and to flourish. Sure we are social creatures and we share resources with one another and form alliances and friendships, But only if we get a mutual benefit from this relationship.

In short. We determine what is deemed good and what is not. There's no good or evil in nature. Our modern empathy and friendliness is a result of our upbringing and prosperous society.

Base natures are exactly that. The true nature of things not twisted, pinched, and walled off by culture, idealism, laws, common courtesy, etc.

It is for young thinkers to realize that society and culture is like a endless dark beast blotting out the sky, pressing down on them. If you reject it, you have nowhere to go. You are cast out. If you accept parts of it, you are bound by it.

A handful will succeed in changing the nature of the beast. Many more will be crushed in its teeth. It is greater than the individual. It is quite literally our god. Created, fed, and maintained by us humans. Religion itself is only part of it's bloated form.

One of the only glimmers of hope against it is that it is not yet monolithic. But that can change very soon. Within 50-100 years even. All it takes is the creation of a true, strong A.I. A Super Intellect. Built to make everything run better. More smoothly. One way or another it will smooth us out as well. Through reprogramming, through subtlety, through any means necessary.

We were always going to make this god real. It was always the end goal of technology. To turn societies made up ideals, into reality.
