Pay off the Jeep and buy a beater. Don't take out a loan, debt makes you a slave. Drive the beater while you save up cash to buy a nicer car.

Source junk yards. Sometimes you can get parts relatively cheap to fix the car.

Maybe consider buying it back from insurance company after the total.

Use insurance to buy new Jeep. Use junkyards and spare time to fix old Jeep and resale it.

You get to learn alot in the process, get a newer jeep, and make money off the repair and resale hobby.

Insurance should pay replacement value plus sales tax. Most will go to pay off loan on jeep but you should have $1000 or so to put down on a similar vehicle and keep your payments the same with same # of month remaining on loan.

I make $80k after tax. I'm not sayin it's a lot, but it's decent.

I drive a beater-- 15 year old car with dents.

Next time I get a car, I'll spend 5-10k max, and only as cash. Debt is terrible.

So is spending money unnecessarily.

Let this be a lesson. How much do you make? It sounds like you're spending 50-25% of your annual salary on a car. I wouldn't do that.

Maybe 5% of two year's salary after tax. For me, that's 160*0.05 = $8k.

Why do you need anything more? As a status symbol? I get laid even driving a beater.

Have tons of experience with jeep. Before you make a decision, drive it. If you can tolerate how it drives until you can afford to fix the cosmetic damage, just let the insurance company pay it off and keep it, free and clear. Put the payments towards the repairs. Downsize / minimalize until you can afford the Jeep lifestyle.

I would also buy a Dash cam (BlackVue 750 2-channel).

Cut you expenses to the bone & join professional organizations in your field of interest early. (outside of the campus)

If your frame is messed up, let the insurance companies sort it out - that's why you have insurance. Not doing it - I have to say OP - you're being silly. Think you're being magnanimous? No. Put it through insurance.

They will give you the Blue Book value, and then you get a crap second-hand car off the lot whilst you're saving for a proper car.

Sometimes a vehicle can be considered a total loss by the insurance company but will not be what is called 'branded.'

the insurance company considers a car a total loss when the repairs would cost more than just paying you what it's worth.

When a car is branded this means it is no longer safe for the road.

If the car is branded you'll be paid your full $18,000 but you have no option to try to salvage the car.

If the car is not branded, this means you have the opportunity to buy it back from the insurance company and fix it yourself.

they will not pay you the full $18,000 at that point. Maybe they pay you seven thousand. And if you can go and get that car fixed for the 7000 then you're back in business.

if the frame is bent but not too badly and the car is not branded the worst thing that's going to happen is you're going to go through your tires a little bit faster.

So there's something to consider.

Thank you everyone for their response.

I will be getting info on how much they're willing to give in the next couple days.

Of course, I plan to buy a used more gas friendly car while in school, due to my 1.5hrs commute.

Was thinking Honda Civic, I do have 2 big ass 100lb dogs tho...any suggestions for a vehicle? I'm not picky, I just like to enjoy the drive.
