When I was about 35 I lived in SF Ca. I had two roommates one of whom was collecting rent from the other and then spending his and his own money on OxyContin. This went on for six months without my knowledge until we got a eviction notice. Luckily I had all my recipes. However I still had to pony up the six months back rent. Again this is the most expensive city on the west coast to live in. I was on the verge of being homeless and I had no idea where to get $12,000. I was dating a girl named Ally at the time and in a moment off worry and weakness I confessed that I was in a bind, that I was worried and fearful. My eyes welled up, as I spoke. No tears, but I was visibly shook. She dumped me the next day. Just like that. So never, ever admit to weakness, always look like you got shit under control.

I got a second job, threw both roommates out, worked 80 hours a week for months, paid off the debt, and learned a huge lesson.

Hell, that’s not even the only time. My last ex and I got into a argument about male privilege once. I told her I was beaten almost daily by my father, my mother had HIV and later died from complications, I was bullied throughout high school, I was once jumped not once but twice over a single game of Street Fighter at a arcade, my father broke my nose once for seeing a movie with a friend, and I’ve literally been called every horrible name in the book over my life time. I asked where the fuck my “male privilege” was because I sure wasn’t feeling it. Her reply was that I was playing the victim. Can you believe that? I had never mentioned any of this shit. I never asked for sympathy from anyone. I didn’t ask for a “safe space” but because I used it to illustrate a fucking point, I was playing the victim card. This was to high light that she didn’t have it a rough as she thought she did, and now I’m playing the victim. Fucking rich!
