That can be applied to every aspect of life. People tell you that you're supposed to do all kinds of things before x and y, when in reality all you need to to is be true to yourself and fulfill your own responsibilities and make yourself happy.

This may be unpopular but here goes. Our purpose is simply to represent the human species -- to just be here and do our thing. If we want to get specific, our purpose would be to advance the human race in any way possible. Whatever form that takes.

Our mere existence helps to perpetuate the species. We need numbers to survive. Some of us will make remarkable achievements that contribute to science and technology. Most will simply lead average lives. Others may die early and serve to enlighten science with data on their demise. All are falling in line with this natural purpose whether they are aware of it or not.

I know everyone's ego needs to feel like we are super duper special. And we are... collectively speaking. But on a one-for-one basis we are completely inconsequential in the cosmos. So enjoy your fleeting existence while you have it. I know that sounds horrible and sarcastic, but it's really all we can do.
