People who chase happiness usually don't have it in any lasting capacity.

What you realize is that life isn't about being happy.

It's about having the experience of living, with good and bad.

Think of it as different flavors

Happiness is sweet fruity flavor

Sadness is a garlic pickle

Anger is hot sauce

Etc etc

So you go thru life experiencing different flavors

Happiness isn't a thing "out there", is an emotion inside your brain. You can feel it by making yourself feel it. External forces don't influence your emotions. External forces influence your thoughts and your thoughts influence your emotions. You can literally change the way you feel by changing the way you think.

Let's go even deeper than that;

If you are a human being, you will experience the whole spectrum of emotions in certain times of your life time. Therefore, perpetual happiness isn't possible. Furthermore, if all you wish to do with your life is to set a goal to feel just happiness, just one emotion for the rest of your life, then I suggest you start shooting heroin 24/7, I guarantee you'll feel happy for the rest of your life, as short as that life may be, it's aligned with the goal you set for your entire life.

Nah, this doesent work. If you arent busting your ass for happiness, it wont just magically appear out of nowhere.

Its a whole different thing to change the chase of happiness to existential contentment. You have a warm bed, fun games, good books, tasty alcohol and the whole world to experience and mold. If that wont be enough, then being a slave to some hole certainly wont make you happy.

From what I understand happiness is sort of a state of mind/being rather than a goal...the way to achieve it is by seeing a positive outcome in a goal or pursuit, and most importantly, progress.

A simple example would be fitness; everyone from the con artist MLM marketing huns to the bodybuilders who actually know what they're doing talk about the "fitness journey"; I might be happy with how I look now, but even then, I've set new goals. I was happiest when I was seeing myself slim down, with visible progress every week.

Nothing like seeing dedication pay off over time, at the gym or at work. None of what I did was so I'd be happier; it was because it was deeply important to me and I was determined to see it pay off.
