I've always believed, saying married men live longer is like saying people died at 30 in the Middle Ages, when really it was infant mortality pulling down the average lifespan. Lots of people lived into their seventies back then.
IMHO the reason mortality is lower among married men, if true at all, is because women use more routine medical care than men do. So if married men's wives nag them into getting annual cancer screenings, a few of them will live thirty years longer.
Meanwhile the median, not average, health status of married men is much worse. Mostly because of obesity-related conditions like hypertension, heart disease and diabetes. Ask any guy who was married for many years. After the first year or two you get bored with sex, then elaborate dinners become the highlight of your day. Sex (and masturbation) less, eat more. Also a man's testosterone declines sharply spending time with his children, which of course kills libido, energy, muscle tone, etc.
Also the author. Can you imagine the Times letting a male write an article like this? "Misogynist!"
