Missouri. Plenty of areas with reasonable land and low taxes. You can get pasture, park like land, or secluded woods. City amenities are usually a short drive away.

I just purchased 32 acres of pasture with a 3 acre pond on a paved state highway (utilities available) 20 minutes from a super Wal-Mart for $91,000. Smaller parcels are available for less. Don't tell everyone. They'll come here and ruin it.

I'm actually interested in the same thing. I've heard that the mid-western states are the best as they have low property taxes.
