Yes!! I’ve wanted to read Dreams of a Ridiculous Man again lately maybe this weekend. Such vivid imagery at the beginning when the captain and the lady come in the room.

I also just finished Fathers and Sons! it’s an interesting story. It also speaks to the political landscape / changes in attitude that were happening in Dostoevsky’s time that he was critical of in Notes from Underground and elsewhere. I wanted to read a bunch of this stuff to serve as context for W&P.

re: Fathers and Sons, what do you think?: I interpreted Arkady as never fully ‘buying’ nihilism since when someone asks Bazarov’s and Arkady’s beliefs, Arkady’s commentary is always along the lines of “we’re nihilists” and then looking towards Bazarov for the actual language, not as a voice for an ideology Arkady agreed with but almost as a kid would look up to an older-brother because Bazarov was intelligent, persuasive (and older) and happened to be a nihilist.

Like Arkady did say he’s a nihilist at times but I think also because Bazarov was critical of Arkady’s father and uncle this ultimately served as a path for Arkady to retreat to the ‘old values’ that his family kept. I also saw Bazarov’s death as an un-confessed suicide since he seemed restless or aimless in post-student life as he had conflicts with nihilism against values like familial and romantic love.

True I agree..Arkady has been shown more of a 'nice guy' who looks to Bazarov for approval. Like Cypher in the Matrix-1, he knows some part of the truth but wants to forget it an embrace the 'loving blue-pilled life' (marriage to the younger sister Katya). The character of his father Nikolay though has been beautifully drawn as someone stuck in the plantation :)

Agree with this! It may be that Turgnev killed Bazarov to show that the 'too radical revolutionary' cannot co-exist in society and will have to give way to the status-quo...also it was his subtle critique of nihilism and so Bazarov's frustration where he was restless or aimless has been nicely depicted. But the last scene where he says 'Now ... darkness ...' is always etched in my mind!

Are there any similar books/authors that you would recommend?

those are good points, Arkady did seem (to me) like he had a foot out of the door on it and it started chipping when Bazarov was arguing with his uncle - there were some pages where I really thought Bazarov was an asshole.

and yeah I wasn’t sure of the motivation of why Bazarov died but that idea of coexisting in society was the one that crossed my mind most immediately. It’s weird though, because commentary on Turgenev seemed to be along the lines that he was himself a sort of ‘western-liberal’ rather than the slavophiles that Bazarov was critical. Dostoevsky mocks Bazarov’s ‘all that matters is 2+2=4’ line frequently in his writings. But maybe Russian people were more (apparently) shocked/reacting to the idea of a protagonist character favoring nihilism when the book came out and that’s what caused the apparent uproar when it first came out.

That last line was chilling as well as his parents’ mourning during at later at the grave.

I actually don’t have that much reading in this area as it’s newer for me. In terms of Russian writing I got Four Plays by Chekhov and if you’re interested in Russian classics that’s definitely up there (I haven’t read it yet) in terms of renown. As an introduction, he has a very short work (like 2.5 pages) called The Student. would be good bedtime reading.
