The idea that the government will pay you to exist in a world that doesn't need to use humanity as labour?

Genocide is a more likely option, much like what happened in communist countries. They won't need to pay for bread lines if their isn't any hungry people.

UBI is just another nail in the coffin of a dying civilisation, we are fucked and no government gives a fuck about their people.

We might have WW3 before the robots get a chance to take over. Otherwise your right it's only a matter of time before it's cheaper to install and operate robots that get cheaper every year than to employ humans who get more expensive each year.

I think that kind of tech is still further away than we would believe. I'm no expert, but advancing AI has proven extremely challenging and progress appears to be slow.

I think some kind of wealth distribution system will become necessary in the future or you will just have probably 1% of people with 99.9% of the wealth since they own all the capital and the machines or technology. This is an unpopular idea around here, but I'm not trying to return civilization back to the days of feudalism.

The first wakeup call will be when transportation jobs get automated. There are 3.5 million professional truck drivers in the U.S. and I don't even know if that accounts for all the other driving jobs.

UBI can't work because money is the abstraction of value. If you take money from people who earned it and give it to people who didn't, it will lose the value it had.

Futurists always bring up automation-caused job losses when they talk about UBI. I think the "gig economy" is a better reason for UBI.

Understandably, companies don't want to hire you at 22 and retire you 40 years later with a full pension and benefits. Then ten years of golf and rapidly declining health => death. That's how your grandparents lived. Companies today want to be lean and efficient, keeping you as a contractor that they can hire and fire weekly or even daily when they want to. The "company man" is dying or dead.

But I just can't see a whole generation delivering pizzas and taking people to the airport forever and ever. Those people vote. Sooner or late your grandpappy with the General Motors pension and full medical will pass on. Then millennials just might vote themselves a few hundred a month allowance to tide them over when the "gigs" are tight.

We already pay millions of people "just to live" with our social safety net. The advantage of UBI is efficiency. Nobody has to supervise you, make sure you tried to look for work this week, pee test you to make sure you're not on drugs. No paperwork and standing army of social workers and bureaucrats needed for UBI. Just Direct Deposit, like they do now for Social Security. Set it and forget it.

People think it's some giant new taxpayer expense, but really it's just redirecting money out of existing social programs + administrative costs, then peanut buttering over all adults.
