I made a mistake

After 13 years of marriage and 2 kids I was done. When I told him I was leaving he wasn't surprised. I had a brief affair eight years earlier that he found out but still wanted to make things work. He never brought up the affair again after I told him it was the biggest mistake of my life. I respected him even less for that because he didn't stand up for himself. Just about everything he did made me mad. I couldn't wait to get out.

Here I am two years later. The divorce was finalized last December and our house was sold earlier this year. And now he's in a new serious relationship. I don't mind being single and I'm not jealous. But now I'm questioning my reasons for wanting a divorce in the first place. Our passion died around the time our first son was born but there was still a love there. I'm just beginning to appreciate how much normal love can change over time. It's not always the love you want. But when it's a real you find out after the fact just how much you miss it. I made up my mind and was sure it was the right decision at the time. I thought I wanted to be free from him. But now I'm missing a lot of the other things we had that were really good in hindsight. And that's what hurts the most. I thought divorce would give me freedom. Instead it filled me with regret that I'll have to deal with for a long time.
