Looks like the next Avengers film is coming out in 30 years and will be a courtroom drama then.

I'd love to see how this goes down in reality (ie Josh brolin vs these actresses). Hilarious.

No way they will accuse him of sexual assault. He is the ultimate Alpha guy after all.
If there was a tiny bit of realism in the movies ... they would all join his harem.

Marvel really fucked up with Thanos. He was one of the most sincere, rational, sympathetic "Villains" I have ever seen. The more screentime he got, the more his motives and goals made sense. Dude is simply practical and knew what was for the best. The fuckin' Avengers made no sense since they didn't have a plan for when the inevitable would happen. Thanos was willing to put the burden on himself for the sake of all life.
Seriously, how could they fuck this up? Thanos was a tragic hero, not a villain.

I mean he could've.. and this is just a hypothetical, instead of killing half the living creatures, idk, doubled the food? doubled the land? anything other than kill half?
Because with his glove, supposedly can do anything, if half creatures would survive with x conditions, then surely all creatures would survive with y conditions, y being 2x or x2 or whatever.

I'm going to upvote you because I love talking about this topic. Thanos is my favorite protagonist since I can remember.
There was no reason to believe that the power of the stones had the power to create something out of nothing. Everything he did was matter manipulation essentially. The stones aren't all powerful. They are fragments from the initial creation of the universe.
So basically, what he could maybe do is pull energy from other places and redistribute it to other places which currently had life. But that wouldn't solve the problem any more than killing half the universe.
But even if he doubled the resources that wouldn't have solved the problem. The problem is greed and selfishness. The earth has plenty of resources to make it so that no one ever goes hungry or dies of thirst, or doesn't have a roof over their head. Yet we have entire countries and populations who go without. That's because most of the wealth and resources are horded by the few. Doubling the resources wouldn't solve this problem. You'd have to make resources infinite.
The problem is human/organic nature. We all evolved in an environment that required survival of the fittest. As long as that is true, as long as we prioritize our own health and survival over others, others will suffer immensally.
I garentee that when Thanos' planet died there were still a few elites at the top that were sitting far prettier than everyone else.
Really, there is no solution to this problem outside of making resources infinite OR restructruring human/sentient nature to be more altruistic and not selfish. If we did this, if Thanos snapped his fingers and everyone woke up tomorrow caring about everyone then we'd create the type of society that Thanos actually wants to create.
All the energy we'd waste on war and petty squabbles over idealogy and resources would go towards creating renewable energy, advances in technology. We'd very quickly move towards the Star Trek society where they essentially have infinite resources so much so that no one NEEDS to actually work. And people are able to pursue their passions with their basic needs satisfied.
What's so interesting about Thanos to me isn't whether or not his solution was right. It was his conviction and the thought about what if he was right?
Think about the movie Snowpiercer. The entire world died in an Ice age except for a small portion of society which survive on a train that constantly runs. Essentially it's the same scenario. Society lives with limited resources, limited space. "If life is left unchecked life will cease to exist."
In the movie Snowpiercer this is an absolute fact. Which is why the guy at the front of the train engineers, essentially, regular massacres to control the population on the train.
Is he right because it is ABSOLUTELY necessary for the continued existence of society? What would you think of Thanos if his solution was infact the only solution? People get hung up on the solution he gave but what if he was right? What if that is the only way to stop life from eating itself?
Would Thanos still be evil?
[–]amol02020 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Nicely written!
[–]ArmaniDiamonds0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Agreed. Very insightful
[–]DiamondxCrafting0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (14 children) | Copy Link
Okay, I did assume the stones were all powerful.
Get rid of some million stars and turn that energy into resources. Also, where did the killed creatures energy go? I still somewhat believe that the stone's are meant to be all powerful, not just manipulating what's there.
Problem isn't resource but greed and selfishness? Don't see how killing have the creatures solves that.
Is he right because it is ABSOLUTELY necessary for the continued existence of society? What would you think of Thanos if his solution was infact the only solution? People get hung up on the solution he gave but what if he was right? What if that is the only way to stop life from eating itself? Would Thanos still be evil?
You're asking a really simple question; if it was in fact the only solution, let alone a solution; then no, of course he wouldn't be evil.
[–]LittleGanymede2 points3 points4 points 7 years ago* (13 children) | Copy Link
This is the crux of it then. The only reason you perceive Thanos as evil is because you are not personally convinced that his solutation works/is necessary.
What does that say about the concept of Hero/Villian or Good and Evil if the only thing that separates the good guy from the bad guy is the necessity of their actions?
To me Thanos is evil even if what he did was necessary. The Train conductor in SnowPiercer is evil. Why? Because society requires evil in order to function.
The real cost of us typing on this computer is greater than we can imagine. A lot of people HAD to do really fucked up things so we could have the chance to sit around and argue on the internet. Evil is absolutely required for the continuation of our species. We require the suffering/murder/sacrifice of other sentient lifeforms to survive.
Our entire existence is evil. We simply rationalize it and excuse it because it's "necessary." We benefit directly from the evil of the past. We wouldn't be here if it wasn't for evil deeds done out of necessity.
In a way Snowpiercer explores this more directly. Which is why Snowpiercer is my favorite movie. It points out just how evil we are as a species. How evil we have to be in order to survive.
Thanos is evil, but so are we. To condemn Thanos for doing what he believed was necessary for the survive of those he cared about (everyone), would also be to condemn our society for doing the exact same thing.
If you try to think about the actual cost of our existence, the amount of suffering required just so you can live in your house is mind boggling.
[–]DiamondxCrafting0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (11 children) | Copy Link
No not only that, as I said "let alone a solution", it's not a solution if the problem's greed and selfishness and unlikely to be a solution if it's resources either.
Submarine A is crashed, Rescue submarine B connected the hatch, 3 survivors are attempting to go through the hatch, A is just falling off a cliff; you can save 2 and leave the third, or not disconnect the hatch, and you all die.
In this situation, "killing" the third, is a good thing, and it's necessary, now if A wasn't falling, it isn't necessary to kill the third, that doesn't mean it's still a good thing.
Was enjoying the discussion, now you're making baseless assumptions.
Can you stop with this vagueness? There wasn't a massacre for your computer nor your internet.
No, evil isn't required, by definition evil is "profoundly immoral and wicked", you know what's not immoral nor wicked? Doing the necessary.
No, we don't require "suffering" of other sentient lifeforms to survive.
You're just repeating yourself at this point. Again, be specific, no our entire existence isn't evil; we would be here even without past evil.
That's not "evil".
No, it's not about what he believes, if somebody believes killing everyone is the solution, it doesn't mean he's correct.
Not one example, seriously, you're so vague, that's not an argument.
[–]LittleGanymede1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (10 children) | Copy Link
There is no good in killing innocents, even if it saves twice the amount of innocents. It's a necessary evil, but still evil. What we should be discussing is what is less evil. You also could have just said the "trolly problem."
Do you know how many sentient beings are killed just to make a road or build a farm? What about to create the food on your plate? On the plate of most people? That's suffering. So yes, even with just that, immersurable suffering is required for our existence. It's survival of the fittest. Let's not forget the foundation of Slavery we used to build our society, or the wars we fought leading to millions of people murdered so our society to continue. The bomb dropped on Hiroshima and Nagesaki which specifically targeted the civilian population in order to end the war.
That you can't fathom other's suffering doesn't mean it doesn't exist.
The scene where the little black boy is down in the engine, shaved head, pulling grime from the engine isn't evil to you?
We simply have a very different definition of evil then.
[–]DiamondxCrafting0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (9 children) | Copy Link
But here's the thing, it's 3 dying people, you saved 2; it's not 2 alive people and you killed 1. They are dead people, that were mostly saved.
Do you know how many sentient beings are killed just to make a road or build a farm? What about to create the food on your plate? On the plate of most people? That's suffering.
I specifically quoted "suffering". Do we "murder" other sentient lifeforms? yes, is it necessary for survival (for example, food)? Yes.
Let's not forget the foundation of Slavery we used to build our society, or the wars we fought leading to millions of people murdered so our society to continue. The bomb dropped on Hiroshima and Nagesaki which specifically targeted the civilian population in order to end the war.
I don't get how this is related nor what point it proves.
Btw, did not watch that movie you're talking about and I'm not arguing what happens in that movie.
It's pretty straight forward to me most of the time, if it's necessary, it's not evil.
[–]LittleGanymede0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link
Yes, we have a very different definition of evil. To you so many autrocities would be not-evil if they were proven to be necessary for a certain outcome you approve of.
Also what constitutes necessity? Necessary for what?

[–]KingOfTheShitPosters0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
Heard this theory before but it ignores a small tidbit mentioned in the movie when Thanos is showing Dr. Strange how his world was before it wiped itself out with overpopulation. Thanos watched his warning prove right and everyone he cared about die. At that point his mind breaking and him looking to prevent this from happening to the universe as a whole no matter the cost to him.

I don't know if you've seen the avengers assemble cartoon on the Disney channel as captain marvel isn't over powered in the cartoon and to defeat their enemy the avengers need to work as a team.
Hopefully they will work as a team to defeat thanos and not rely on captain marvel too much as I always thought that thor and hulk are the strongest avengers.

Thanos could literally beat all of them with none of the infinity stones.

[–]nothingfinal0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
In the comics he wouldn’t have. He would have had no trouble beating the 4 of them at the same time. The two without superpowers he probably wouldn’t have even noticed attacking him.
