I have been diagnosed with a learning disability. Only way I learn is by getting my hands dirty, and forcing myself to learn

I'm trying to teach myself python and it's a little overwhelming because I'm a little slow.

You’re a little slow compared to who? I remembered when I started lifting and it took me months to bench 60kg. Now it’s my warmup set and I was a skinny fuck. Still am because genetics are a bitch but I can life a decent amount for my size. What worked for me was I just kept at it notching up cumulative gains which gave me confidence and muscle memory

I’ve coded as well also so maybe you should set discrete achievable self goals or mini projects. I also think coding is something that is quite sprawling in nature and it’s better to specialise. I think you’ll continue to struggle but as time goes on it will be struggling against more complex problems. It’ll never end and most likely you won’t want it to because that’s the challenge

Intelligence is an extremely abstract concept. Perhaps the part that is most tangible is attention/concentration. The absence or weakness of this (which can be a great impediment to learning/programming) is ADD.

I probably have a decent dose of ADD, but after 20 years of sticking with it, I can code with the best of them.

Not enough can be said for the "hello, world" program. That's where it all starts, with a simple print. Then you build on, expand it. The print is key because it is:

Psychological reinforcement that it has started working
Provides insight (printing error conditions, states/contents of variables, etc.)

Most importantly, I think programming is a faculty that improves with exercise. By doing it, you get better at it. Python is a good place to start. Follow the tutorials. I noticed MIT online provides a free online intro CS course using Python. ****Not enough can be said about the benefit of taking classes with good programming assignments to get you started. Pace yourself and remember to take breaks when you get tired!

Find a good course on youtube not the crashcourse ones. Whenever you learn something new on it do some practice about it. For example you learn if else statement try to make a calculator app, whenever you learn loops do something else. Learning code for the first time is hard its normal to be slow.

Have you had a diagnosis? If you think you have LD, the first thing you should do is have a psycho-educational assessment done by a qualified professional. There are most likely learning disability advocacy groups in your area. Contact them and ask for a referral. Failing that, speak to a doctor.

They may eventually prescribe anything from medication to Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. At the very least, they'll provide coping mechanisms.

I was diagnosed with ADD. Its harder to stay focused on tedious tasks. You have to build your concentration like you would a muscle.

OP, the guy I work for has been diagnosed with a learning disability for 45 years. Today he holds top tier IT certs like CISSP, CISM, CHFIM, and many more. How does he do it? He buckles down and applies as much time as he can. I once saw the guy walking around in the hallways reciting what I thought were poems, but he had built a rime for some firewall scheme that involved over 200 parts. No idea what that means. I fix printers. Keep at it and apply yourself!

It would help a lot if you get interested in the subject. Asking lot of “why, how” question.

Change your outlook on the “why” python is important instead of just learning the subject to get ahead.
