I own about two dozen guitars and learned how to do setups, electronic wiring and fret dressing but you’re right in that once you get to that point (especially an electric with a bolt-on neck) it’s just not worth it.

This is a tough one man. Musical instruments are a luxury item and even before the pandemic hit live music was taking it in the pants between publishers leaning on venues and a lack of demand from the smartphone zombies.

I have some rare birds as well including some handmade guitars from 2 luthiers and a 1960 McCarty LH Gibson double cut with a braz board. I’ve also got a few acoustics including a Taylor 414ce.

If I knew how to work wood and metal and I was looking for a hustle....have you considered gunsmithing? It kind of seems like the only arts that in demand are of the martial type. It’s a shame too.

I can empathize though. In truth I wouldn’t mind parting with a few of my pieces but this doesn’t really feel like a sellers market right now. Musical instruments are luxury items and the schools are still closed and the gigs are still dry.

Have you ever built a guitar from the ground up? What kinds of woods did you use? A semi renowned luthier once told me that the secret was to use a denser type of wood in the neck vs the body.

It's not big dollars unless you develop some volume, but there's a good demand for houseplants. I've sold succulents & succulent baskets, aloe veras and african violets for $4 to $6 for small to medium plants by advertising online and customer pick ups. They're fairly easy to grow quickly and I've always sold all I've had. You could probably do better volume in a town or city--I'm in the rural Midwest. If you have room you could grow some produce like tomatoes, squash, peppers and sell it too.
