Human Service Professionals’ Perceptions of Self-Efficacy with Male Sexual Abuse Clients [thesis]

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to understand how human service professionals perceive their self-efficacy and preparedness to engage and treat men who were sexually assaulted as children when sexual abuse issues are not the presenting issue. There is little research involving men who were sexually abused and their treating professionals. A gap in the literature is the lack of qualitative research on the preparedness and self-efficacy of human service professionals treating this population when it is not the presenting issue. This generic qualitative study utilized social cognitive theory to address the gap in the literature pertaining to human service professionals’ self-efficacy and preparedness to treat adult men who were sexually abused when it was not the presenting issue. Semi-structured interviews were conducted, interviewing 10 human service professionals between the ages of 30 and 53, who previously treated adult men who disclosed being sexually abused as a child when it was not their presenting issue in treatment. An inductive thematic analysis was conducted to analyze the data collected, which produced six themes that add to the understanding of the self-efficacy and preparedness of human service professionals to treat this population. The themes described the relationship between self-efficacy and training, supervision, and work processes. The study’s findings suggest that most human service professionals lack the self-efficacy and preparedness to treat adult men sexually abused as children when it was not their presenting issue. The study’s findings suggest that self-efficacy and preparedness are at least in part impacted by training, work processes, and regular supervision meetings that allow human service professionals to trust their supervisors and speak openly.
