I am not posting this link for any other reason than this: that it's well past time that people recognised and remembered that it is blokes who designed and built every rivet and every wire of the infrastructure we all take for granted, and it's pretty much blokes who were all of the deaths and crippling injuries suffered during the building of the Sydney Harbour Bridge, the Snowy Mountains Hydro project, the Brooklyn Bridge, the Hoover dam and so on and so forth.

I'll be 59 shortly: I've worked at heights before (tree surgery, replacing gutters on 4-storey buildings with only my feet in the fascia boards for support) and I'm still a truck driver. But I'll be buggered if I'd hang off a piece of steel 200' above the water, let alone chuck hot rivets around at 300' above sea level with nothing below except the RSJ you're standing on. I do not wish to demean the vital role women played back when the Harbour Bridge or the Brooklyn Bridge or the Snowy Mtns Hydro project were being built, in fact quite the reverse - without hard-working women the male death toll would doubtless have been much higher, perhaps to the extent that few of these would have been built.

And yet... how many women can you see hanging off lumps of steel 200' above the water? None. Is it 'Patriarchy' that stopped women - any woman - being Rosie the Riveter dangling by her fingernails while lobbing hot rivets around 300' up in the air? No. It's simply this: blokes - generation upon generation upon generation - have thought of and designed and tested (and tested and tested) and built and maintained bridges and dams and electricity grids and sewers and roads and railways and ...

... and it's high time all of the Moaning Minnies (female and male) who bitch and whine about men and our "toxic masculinity" remembered that it's been blokes who've got us where we are now. Generation upon generation of ordinary (and sometimes extraordinary) geezers like you and me and your fathers and your grandfathers.

Every now and then, when I stumble upon (yet) another opinion piece or blog or "social media" rant disparaging men and our ways (many of them written by males), I want to show them photos of that bloke hanging off a lump of steel godnose-how-many-feet-in-the-air 80 years ago and ask them: "Do you even know what a rivet is? If so, do you know how to lob hot ones around 300' above sea level hanging on by your toenails? If your answer to any of these questions is 'No', then kindly shut the fcuk up about the Patriarchy and 'toxic masculinity'"
