There are a few rare examples of where women are used as cannon-fodder.

The most extreme example is the finale of Buffy, where an army of freshly made vampire slayers gets thrown into the jaws of the hell mouth against an army of vampires.

For some strange reason female goons seem to be more common in the fantasy/gothic/vampire genre. In Penny Dreadful there were quite a few naked witch goons, dying horribly. And the Brides of Dracula were used a few times too. Female zombies aren't that rare either.

The reason of course is, hiring women as goons would be such a big leap you have to take for suspension of disbelief in anything that pretends to be somewhat realistic. Although I read that Gaddafi had a squad of female bodygards, or whatever you want to call them.

But female security personnel isn't all that rare. Sitting at the monitors and walking the premises a few times a night with flashlights.

So once we get a few movies where the hero can nonchalantly knock out those while breaking and entering some compound or office building without it being held against him, we are a bit closer to equality in that area.

Great piece.

Interesting article. I think the author hits upon a real element near the end but then breezes right by it. The 'dimorphic' thing - women and men are different physically.

However, current western behaviour in attempting to make the world somehow completely 'fair' is working hard to create the delusional idea that biological differences don't exist. If we could believe that, then the thought experiments he proposes wouldn't be distasteful. But we know that isn't true.

If you accept biological differences, like men, on average, are stronger, then the reasons for this start to come out of the dark. Who wants to watch a somebody demolish a bunch of people who were obviously weaker. That's not heroic.

You could replace women in the fight thought experiments with 12 year old boys. We wouldn't be particularly comfortable with that situation either. It doesn't fit our mythology. We want the opponents to be at least having the appearance of a threat to overcome. Ideally an overwhelming threat. A man or a woman beating up a small army of male goons fits the myth. A man beating up a bunch of women or children? Not so much. Because we don't believe the lie that there is no difference.

Of course, there is also the 'perpetuation of the species' thing too. Women do have a value, just for existing, and I think we recognize that too. The destruction of that value makes us uncomfortable.
