I think I'll try to avoid a wall of text and just try to lay out what I'm thinking as simply as possible:

Many have tried to point to the Steubenville case as evidence of ''rape culture'' in America. How else could these boys, their friends, coaches, parents and community handle the situation so incredibly poorly?

To me the obvious answer is our culture's cult like glorification of athletes at all levels. I think the situation would've been similar if the kids had committed any crime. The kids knew what the were doing was wrong for most people, but they're talented athletes in a town full of people who practically hero worshiped them for that. I think (like many athletes at all levels) they'd come to feel that they were above the rules, laws and even morals of everyone else because of the status their community had created for them.

Why is no one talking about it from that perspective? Or did I just miss that?
