Don't sign anything until she gets a paternity test done. You might have to wait until it's born before you can stop worrying about it tho, which sucks.

Something good to know is that in California the only way she can put your name on the birth certificate if you're not at the hospital to acknowledge and sign it at birth is by either a paternity test (voluntary or compelled by court order) or if you sign an 'acknowledgement of paternity' form to declare paternity.

Ask for a paternity test asap. That's the only way not to have legal problems later.

I would go to a lawyer or notary and write a lengthy and descriptive statement declaring your concern for paternity and state you have no intention of signing the birth certificate or claiming paternity until a conclusive test is performed. Have several copies notarized in case one is damaged, and deliver one to the woman. Your concern is completely rational.

Tell her you will have a paternity test done when possible. If it is yours you will pay for it for 20 years. You made it. If it ain't yours tell her she won't get a nickel.

If she says she is pregnant, it is probably based on a urine pregnancy test, possibly in addition to ultrasound. The testing is highly accurate.

Just FYI, ultrasound does not predict paternity.

There are some companies that market paternity tests that can be performed prior to the birth of the child. Some companies market tests that are able to isolate feta DNA from the mother's blood sample (without doing CVS / amniocentesis). Not sure on the technicalities, but you'd have to inquire with those companies.

Otherwise, you'd have to do it in case there is a CVS or amniocentesis, or when the child is born.

No matter what, you'd be best off by providing the woman with a sample of your blood or saliva, and letting her know about paternity testing that can be performed on her blood, comparing to yours, isolating fetal DNA from her blood. She should be free to run the test on her own by whichever method she chooses.

But regardless whether she chooses to test, you should insist on your own paternity test, to be done while she is pregnant or afterwards.

Under no circumstance should you sign any paperwork related to the child, or hold yourself out (present yourself) as the father, until you have your own DNA Paternity test result on hand. Preferably, one which is based on samples which have been in your possession only.

There are some collection kits that can be submitted by mail.

Cost is pretty low.

Also, since you don't want to be a father, you should let her know, and offer to pay the cost of an abortion -- it would be a bargain.
