Obviously the system works this way, because it's in the best interest of the child.

But for some reason I always get it confused... which one is the child again? Is it the mother or the baby? Since the mother is able to kill the baby before birth, or abandon it without consequence, I'm guessing that the mother would be the child.

So basically the father and baby have to make some compromises for the sake of the mother, which makes perfect sense now that I think about it. It's not the woman's fault that some man chose to have sex with her, or that some baby chose to be born. She shouldn't be punished for merely showing up.
